The popular video game franchise, Far Cry, appears to be the next major title slated for a television adaptation. Ubisoft briefly confirmed this development on its official website, only to quickly remove the announcement. However, in the age of the internet, information, once posted, is rarely truly deleted, and details of the original announcement have been preserved by vigilant users.
Reports circulating on Reddit, based on the now-deleted announcement, indicate that the series is expected to star Rob Mac (the actor from *It`s Always Sunny in Philadelphia*, who recently changed his name from Rob McElhenney). Mac will also take on a producing role, joining Noah Hawley (*Alien: Earth*), Jackie Cohn, Michael Garcia, and Nick Frenkel. Ubisoft executives Gerard Guillemot, Margaret Boykin, and Austin Dill are also attached to the project in various capacities. The series is reportedly being developed for the FX network.
“This collaboration is truly a treasure trove,” Margaret Boykin was quoted saying in the removed post. “Far Cry delves into the darkest and most absurd aspects of humanity, a psychological descent that aligns perfectly with FX`s bold and fearless narrative approach.”
The show is anticipated to adopt an “anthology drama” format, where each season will explore a distinct world with a fresh cast of actors, thereby mirroring the diverse storytelling approach characteristic of the game franchise. This strategic move aligns with Ubisoft`s broader initiative to concentrate on its flagship properties—namely Assassin`s Creed, Far Cry, and Rainbow Six—through a newly established subsidiary partly funded by Tencent and overseen by Charlie Guillemot, the son of Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot.
Regarding the Far Cry games, the most recent main installment was Far Cry 6 in 2021, which received a somewhat lukewarm reception. Since then, rumors have suggested that Ubisoft is looking to significantly innovate the franchise`s open-world formula for its upcoming entries. Fans can also enjoy an enhanced experience of Far Cry 4, which now boasts a 60fps update on PlayStation 5, making it look remarkably good.
