Explore Unbeatable Deals on J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth Books

Amazon`s recent Prime Big Deal Days event presented a fantastic opportunity for book lovers, especially fans of fantasy and science fiction, with significant markdowns on popular box sets. Among the most sought-after offers were various editions that transport readers back to J.R.R. Tolkien`s beloved Middle-earth, making it an ideal time to expand your collection or discover new treasures from the legendary author.

Vintage Lord of the Rings Hardcover Box Set (1988 Edition)

A true highlight of the sale was the cherished three-book hardcover box set of “The Lord of the Rings,” featuring iconic artwork by Alan Lee on the covers and presented in an elegant display box. Originally priced at $90, this vintage collection was available for just $40.79, marking its lowest price of the year.

This 1988 edition is celebrated as one of the most popular modern versions of “The Lord of the Rings,” providing an affordable way to own copies graced with Alan Lee`s illustrations. Lee, widely regarded as the foremost artist to interpret Tolkien`s works, delivers breathtaking Middle-earth landscapes and maps. The set`s slipcase features wrap-around art that mirrors the individual covers of “The Fellowship of the Ring,” “The Two Towers,” and “The Return of the King.” Each cover is designed like a painting, with full-color illustrations encased in ornate, detailed frames. These editions also include fold-out maps of Middle-earth during the Third Age and extensive appendices offering rich background and reference material.

With its subdued color palette, classic typeface, and subtly faded yellow dust jackets, these editions exude an authentic vintage charm. Despite being over 45 years old, they remain among the most visually appealing editions available today, which explains their continued popularity and availability. The complete 1988 edition of “The Lord of the Rings” spans 1,214 pages across its three volumes. While individual hardcovers are sold separately, acquiring the box set is generally more cost-effective and includes the attractive display box.

Deluxe Illustrated and Other Alan Lee Editions

Beyond the 1988 editions, other beautifully illustrated sets by Alan Lee were also discounted. Last year, William Morrow released a remastered version of the exceptional 1992 Centenary Edition of “The Lord of the Rings.” This premium collector`s set, usually retailing for $325, was offered for $135.09 (a 58% discount). This three-volume collection comes in a bespoke cloth board display box and boasts over 50 new illustrations and drawings by Lee. The books themselves are bound in cloth board cases and quarter-bound in leather, offering a luxurious reading experience.

Additionally, a four-book hardcover box set featuring Alan Lee`s illustrations, which notably includes “The Hobbit,” is slated for publication by William Morrow in October for $139.50 (originally $150). This particular edition, initially released in the UK in 2020, can sometimes be found at a lower price as the UK version.

Budget-Friendly Collector`s Edition Hardcovers

The sale also featured discounts on last year`s more budget-conscious “Lord of the Rings Collector`s Edition” hardcovers. These editions share a similar size to the 1988 versions but present a contemporary aesthetic, complete with stained edges, foil-stamped cover art, interior maps, and ribbon bookmarks. Matching editions of “The Hobbit” and “The Silmarillion” were also part of this series.

These five hardcover editions, originally priced at $35 each, were all available for $15 or less. “The Hobbit Collector’s Edition” was priced at $11.33, and “The Silmarillion Collector’s Edition” at $12.26. While a box set of “The Lord of the Rings” volumes exists, purchasing the individual books often proved to be more economical during this sale.

  • The Hobbit Collector’s Edition – $11.33 ($35)
  • The Silmarillion Collector’s Edition – $12.26 ($35)
  • The Fellowship of the Ring Collector’s Edition – $14.92 ($35)
  • The Two Towers Collector`s Edition – $12.83 ($35)
  • The Return of the King Collector’s Edition – $15.07 ($35)
  • The Lord of the Rings Collector`s Edition Box Set – $59.79 ($105)

The History of Middle-earth Collections

Significant savings were also available on “The Complete History of Middle-earth,” a monumental 5,440-page box set. This collection compiles all 12 volumes of “The History of Middle-earth” into three hardcovers. Originally $250, this comprehensive set was reduced to an unprecedented $80.65. This series delves deep into Tolkien`s creative process and the evolution of his legendary world, offering unparalleled insights for dedicated fans. The 2024 series, comprising 15 “History of Middle-earth” books across four decorative box sets, also saw discounts:

  • The Complete History of Middle-earth – $80.65 ($250)
