Experience “Grave of the Fireflies” on Blu-ray: Special Editions Available

Fans of Studio Ghibli can now acquire the critically acclaimed film, Grave of the Fireflies, at a reduced price. Both the Limited Edition Steelbook and standard Blu-ray versions, reissued by Shout Factory on July 8, are currently discounted. The Limited Edition Steelbook is available for $22, down from $27, while the standard Blu-ray is priced at $18, reduced from $25.

While many Studio Ghibli productions are celebrated for their fantasy elements and environmental themes, Grave of the Fireflies stands as a poignant exception. Directed by Isao Takahata, this 1989 film is a powerful, PG-13 rated drama based on the real-life accounts of World War II survivor Akiyuki Nosaka. It vividly portrays the harsh realities faced by 14-year-old Seita and his four-year-old sister Setsuko as war orphans in Japan, navigating food shortages, difficult relatives, and Allied bombing raids during the final days of the war. Despite its grim subject matter, the film is an enduring animated classic, offering fleeting moments of hope amidst its bleak narrative and delivering a profound message. Viewers should prepare for an emotionally intense experience.

The Limited Edition Steelbook includes 1080p Blu-ray and DVD versions, accompanied by a wealth of bonus features. These extras provide an in-depth look at the film`s creation, featuring storyboards, unproduced deleted scenes presented as storyboards, extensive image galleries, a collection of trailers, an interview with director Isao Takahata, and a discussion with the late film critic Roger Ebert. The standard Blu-ray edition, identical in content to the Steelbook except for its plastic case and cardboard sleeve, offers a more budget-friendly option at $18, providing the same immersive film experience and bonus content.

The current Grave of the Fireflies Steelbook design aligns with the aesthetic of recent releases, such as The Boy and the Heron Steelbook, departing from the single-background color style of earlier Studio Ghibli Steelbook series. Previous Blu-ray editions of Grave of the Fireflies, including an older steelbook release, have been out of print for several years.
