Epic Games Revokes ‘Fraudulent’ Fortnite Purchases, Sparking Reddit Outcry

The Fortnite Battle Royale subreddit recently saw a surge of complaints as numerous players discovered their cosmetic items and V-Bucks had been unexpectedly removed from their accounts upon logging in. This widespread issue, affecting many simultaneously and even revoking items held for months, caused significant upset. Epic Games later confirmed the revocations were legitimate, attributing the delay in action to a specific bug on the Xbox platform. They further clarified that the issue was confined to Xbox and has since been resolved across all platforms.

Before Epic`s official statement, the incident had already generated numerous discussions across Reddit. Despite Epic`s clarification, many players continue to assert their innocence, claiming legitimate purchases on platforms such as PlayStation or PC were also affected, raising concerns that the enforcement action might have inadvertently impacted innocent users.

Epic typically reclaims purchased items or V-Bucks under several conditions. The most common scenario involves players refunding V-Buck purchases through their bank or platform provider. In such cases, any items acquired with those V-Bucks, along with the currency itself, are subject to revocation. Epic indicated that a glitch had previously allowed some players to retain refunded V-Bucks, a discrepancy they are now rectifying.

Players have also reported engaging in other activities that prompted Epic`s intervention, such as acquiring accounts pre-loaded with V-Bucks to gift items, exploiting regional price differences on Xbox, or purchasing V-Bucks cards from unofficial third-party vendors. Given Epic`s extensive enforcement campaign targeting numerous individuals for infractions accumulated over several months, the reasons behind specific revocations are varied.

The situation is further complicated by Fortnite`s “fear of missing out” (FOMO) driven item shop. Players who lost specific cosmetic items might find it impossible to re-purchase them legitimately, as many items are only available for limited periods annually.
