EA CEO on Competition: Welcoming Rematch and Evolving the FC Series

This year, a new football game, Sloclap`s Rematch, entered the market, and EA CEO Andrew Wilson expressed his approval of the new competition. During EA`s latest earnings call, Wilson stated that they “love competition” when asked about potential “competitive pressure” on their FC series.

Undoubtedly, Rematch and EA`s FC series are not direct competitors due to the significantly different scales of their franchises. Nevertheless, Rematch is a new player in the football game market that EA is paying attention to.

“We come to work every day to compete—that has been true for all our games, especially our sports titles, for the better part of 30 or 40 years,” Wilson stated, as reported by GamesRadar. “I believe competition makes us better. We constantly monitor what our competitors are doing, assess new needs being met for new players, and strive to integrate that into our offerings for gamers.”

Rematch is an arcade-style football game that does not feature real-life players or leagues. Wilson emphasized that the “magnitude of licenses” is a key advantage that sets the EA FC series apart.

Nonetheless, Wilson stated that EA will not “rest on its laurels” and will seek new ways to attract and retain fans. “We never act arrogantly, believing we don`t need to carefully analyze what`s happening in the market and what new players might want from the next football game,” he added.

Rematch was released in June on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S, attracting 5 million players within its first month. The next installment of EA Sports FC, meanwhile, is scheduled for a September launch.
