Following extensive rumors and anticipation, Square Enix officially confirmed during Friday`s Nintendo Direct that a complete remake of Dragon Quest VII, titled Dragon Quest VII: Reimagined, is in active development. This highly anticipated JRPG is set to launch on February 5, 2026, for both Nintendo Switch and the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2. Pre-orders are now available via the Nintendo eShop, allowing fans to secure their copy well in advance.
A Classic Reimagined for Modern Consoles
Dragon Quest VII: Reimagined represents a comprehensive overhaul of the original PlayStation classic from 2000. It boasts modernized graphics reminiscent of Dragon Quest XI, bringing a fresh visual appeal to a beloved title. The narrative centers on a young protagonist from the serene island of Estard. Alongside his trusted companions, Kiefer and Maribel, he uncovers ancient ruins that grant them the extraordinary power to traverse time to long-lost continents. Players will embark on journeys into the past, aiming to rectify the devastating events that led to the destruction of these lands and reintegrate them into the present, effectively reconstructing the world piece by piece over time.
A decade ago, at the 2015 Nintendo Direct, Dragon Quest VII was revealed for an international release on the Nintendo 3DS, subtitled Fragments of the Forgotten Past. This 3DS rendition was a condensed experience, with significant portions of the original content, including the introductory sequence, being removed to streamline gameplay and shorten the overall length of the game.
Other Major Square Enix Updates
Beyond Dragon Quest, Square Enix is simultaneously developing another prominent `seventh` entry: the Final Fantasy VII Remake series. The scenario for the third and final part of this trilogy was finalized in early 2025, marking a key development milestone in its production. Furthermore, it was announced in May that all three installments of the Final Fantasy VII Remake saga, encompassing Final Fantasy VII Rebirth (which debuted in 2024), are slated for release on the Nintendo Switch 2. While the ultimate chapter`s release date is yet to be publicly announced, its development is well underway as the series progresses towards its highly anticipated conclusion.
As the launch of Dragon Quest VII: Reimagined is still several months away, fans can immerse themselves in other series entries in the meantime. The Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake, released last year, offers a nostalgic yet updated experience. Additionally, Square Enix has scheduled the release of the Dragon Quest 1+2 HD-2D Remake for October 30, offering more classic adventures to explore.
