A Deep Dive into the Remake: Visuals, Story, and Gameplay
Dragon Quest VII Reimagined represents a complete remake of the original PlayStation 1 title, Dragon Quest VII, which first debuted in 2000. While this marks the second time the expansive JRPG has been remade—following a Nintendo 3DS version in 2016—the `Reimagined` edition appears to be a far more comprehensive overhaul. It boasts a beautiful new art style, evoking the appearance of sculpted figurines, reminiscent of the PS1`s full-motion video cutscenes. The game retains the classic top-down perspective from the original PlayStation release. From initial impressions, this refreshed visual approach perfectly complements the iconic character and monster designs created by the late Akira Toriyama.
Both the announcement trailer and the official game website indicate that Dragon Quest VII Reimagined will introduce significant alterations to both its narrative and gameplay. Although specific story changes remain undisclosed, Square Enix has stated that the storyline has been “reworked to be pacier and more accessible to players.” This update is hardly unexpected, given that the PS1 and 3DS iterations were known for their immense scale, often requiring over 100 hours to complete the main quest alone.
Regarding gameplay, the `Reimagined` version preserves the original turn-based combat system, offering options to accelerate battle speed or enable auto-battling. Similar to the 3DS remake, players will be able to see monster encounters on the field and can automatically defeat weaker enemies without initiating full combat. Furthermore, the game will feature an updated class system, allowing party members to equip two classes simultaneously, alongside various refinements and enhancements to each vocation.
Other Upcoming Dragon Quest Remakes
Dragon Quest VII Reimagined is not the only remake on the horizon for the series. The Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake is also set to release on October 30 for PS5, Xbox, Switch 2, Switch, and PC, with preorders priced at $60 across all platforms. This title offers enhanced versions of the inaugural two Dragon Quest games from the 1980s, featuring all-new graphics, gameplay updates, and even fresh content. This HD-2D release follows the success of a similar HD-2D remake for Dragon Quest 3, which debuted last year on all consoles and recently received a Switch 2 Edition upgrade for improved performance on Nintendo`s latest handheld. While anticipation builds for the long-awaited Dragon Quest 12, these remakes of classic entries are sure to keep fans thoroughly engaged in the interim.
