Square Enix has officially confirmed details regarding the Nintendo Switch and upcoming Switch 2 versions of the Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake. Unfortunately, the news is disappointing: the company has stated there will be no upgrade path — neither free nor paid — between the different console releases. Each version will be treated as a separate purchase.

This information, first noticed by Wario64, was published in an FAQ section on the official Japanese Dragon Quest website. The exact wording on the page reads: “No, there is no upgrade path currently available or planned. Please buy your copy for whichever system you would like to play on.” It also clarifies that the performance of the original Switch version will be capped on the Switch 2, meaning that even a slight graphical edge will require purchasing the version specifically for the new console.
Understandably, this news has upset a segment of fans, partly due to concerns and reservations surrounding the new Switch 2 game key cards. The Dragon Quest remakes for Switch 2 will be distributed on these key cards, which have proven controversial since their widespread adoption on the new system. They do not technically hold any game data; instead, they essentially grant a one-time permission to digitally download the game. In contrast, the version for the original Switch comes on a traditional cartridge with the game files directly on it.
Knowledgeable fans were hoping they might be able to purchase the similarly priced Switch version and receive a free or inexpensive upgrade, as is typical for cross-generation games. Notably, Square Enix is offering an upgrade path for another major remake this year, Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles, although that game is not receiving a Switch 2 release.

Further down in the FAQ, Square Enix also confirms that players who completed the Dragon Quest III remake on Switch will be able to transfer their save data to the Switch 2 version of Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake. However, save data migration between the different versions of Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake itself (from Switch to Switch 2, or vice versa) will not be possible. This means you cannot start the upcoming games on your Switch and then transfer your save over to a Switch 2 version if you acquire one later, or vice versa.
