Dragon Quest 7 Remake Reportedly In The Works

A recent report suggests that Square Enix is developing a remake of Dragon Quest VII. The original role-playing game first launched on PlayStation in Japan in 2000 and in the US in 2001. This rumored new version is expected to be released around 2026.

According to MP1st, the project is being referred to as a full `remake` rather than an `HD remake,` unlike the Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake released last year. This distinction implies the game might undergo more substantial changes beyond just updated visuals, potentially including alterations to gameplay. Before the potential DQVII remake arrives, Square Enix is set to launch the Dragon Quest 1+2 HD-2D Remake on October 30.

Interestingly, Masaaki Hayasaka, the producer of the Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake, mentioned earlier this year his personal desire to work on Final Fantasy VI next. He clarified this was his own preference and noted that the beloved RPG was a significant source of inspiration for Octopath Traveler, the first HD-2D title.

This wouldn`t be the first instance of Square Enix updating Dragon Quest VII. In the mid-2010s, the company released Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past for the Nintendo 3DS. That updated version featured refreshed graphics and made enemies visible on the world map.

Square Enix is also currently busy remaking the seventh installment of another major RPG series. The story scenario for the third segment of the Final Fantasy VII Remake was finalized early in 2025. In May, the company confirmed the entire Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy would be available on the Switch 2. Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, the second game, came out in 2024, and the release date for the concluding part has not yet been announced.
