Double Fine’s Unique Tribute to Ozzy Osbourne

Following the passing of Ozzy Osbourne, the celebrated rock-and-roll icon from Black Sabbath, game developer Double Fine chose to honor his memory by offering their game, Brutal Legend, free on PC for a symbolic period of 666 minutes. Osbourne`s distinctive image and voice are featured within the game, notably as the characters The Guardian of Metal and Dadbat.

Double Fine announced this “incredible deal” on BlueSky, an offer that had already concluded by the time of this publication. The distribution of Brutal Legend without cost via Itch.io was explicitly stated by the developer as a way to commemorate “Ozzy`s larger-than-life rock and roll legacy.”

Ozzy Osbourne died on July 22, 2025. Weeks prior, he performed his last show with Black Sabbath at the “Back to the Beginning” concert in England, as reported by the New York Times. For over two decades, Osbourne, alongside his wife Sharon, was instrumental in overseeing the annual Ozzfest tour. He also forged a highly successful solo career after departing from Black Sabbath and holds the distinction of being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice.

Brutal Legend was not the sole instance of Osbourne`s involvement in a popular video game. The musician also made an appearance in Guitar Hero World Tour, where players could perform his classic tracks like `Crazy Train` and `Mr. Crowley.` Furthermore, Osbourne`s music has been integrated into other notable game titles, including Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas and entries in the Madden series.
