Dolby Introduces AI-Enhanced Dolby Vision 2 HDR with Gaming Focus

Dolby has revealed Dolby Vision 2, an evolution of its exclusive HDR technology that extends beyond traditional High Dynamic Range. This enhanced standard integrates artificial intelligence, promising to dynamically adjust to the displayed content for an optimal visual experience.

Featuring an upgraded image engine, Dolby Vision 2 is designed to elevate the visual quality of both new and existing Dolby Vision content. A key innovation in this iteration is “Content Intelligence,” an AI-driven system that intelligently adapts display settings according to the specific content being viewed and the ambient viewing conditions.

These advanced functionalities encompass ambient light detection and tailored adjustments to meet the distinct demands of live sports and gaming. Additionally, the intelligent suite includes “Precision Black,” a feature seemingly designed to address common viewer concerns about overly dark premium TV content. Dolby states that Vision 2 can enhance the clarity of dark scenes across various viewing environments, all while preserving the creator`s original artistic vision.

Dolby Vision 2 also ventures into the often-debated realm of motion smoothing. However, Dolby positions its “Authentic Motion” feature as “the world`s first creative-driven motion control tool,” aiming to deliver a more genuinely cinematic feel without undesirable judder. Motion smoothing has historically been criticized by filmmakers, who frequently advise viewers to disable it to prevent the “soap opera effect.” Therefore, the practical implementation of Dolby`s cinematic approach to motion control will be closely watched.

While Dolby Vision 2 is in its initial stages, early partners are already emerging. Hisense plans to integrate the new standard into its high-end television offerings, and CANAL+ has committed to supporting Dolby Vision 2 for its distributed content. Televisions featuring Dolby Vision 2 will be available in two distinct tiers: the standard Dolby Vision 2, and the premium Dolby Vision 2 Max, which will boast “additional premium features.”

Although Dolby Vision`s adoption within the gaming sector isn`t widespread, it has seen increasing support for titles on Xbox Series X|S since its introduction in 2021. While Dolby has not yet detailed specific game industry plans for the new Dolby Vision 2 standard, it is anticipated that existing Dolby Vision-compatible games will experience enhanced visual quality when played on a Dolby Vision 2-equipped television.
