Diablo 4 has officially received government approval from China`s National Press and Publication Administration and is now set for release in the expansive Chinese market.
As reported by Wowhead, Diablo 4 was one of only seven foreign-developed games approved in July by the government agency, alongside 127 titles developed domestically. This recent wave of approvals brings the total number of foreign games cleared for release in China this year to 62.
The pace of foreign game approvals has notably accelerated in recent years, with reviews now occurring monthly instead of bi-monthly. This marks a significant shift, especially considering a previous period from July 2021 to March 2022 when no new games were approved. Last month, China approved a record 158 new games, achieving a multi-year high, according to Chinese news outlet Yicai Global.
This development is a considerable victory for Blizzard, particularly following their renewed partnership with Chinese gaming giant NetEase in 2024. This re-collaboration aims to re-introduce games like World of Warcraft and Overwatch 2 to China, after previous licensing disagreements led to many Blizzard titles being unavailable in the region for most of 2023 and early 2024. It was during this period of unavailability that Diablo 4 made its global debut in June 2023.
While an official release date for Diablo 4 in China has yet to be announced by Blizzard or NetEase, it is widely expected that the Chinese version will feature several modifications compared to the global release. Historically, Blizzard`s games released in China have utilized distinct, region-locked clients and servers, often incorporating exclusive regional events and cosmetic items.
To adhere to Chinese government regulations, localized versions of Blizzard games frequently undergo various content adjustments. For Diablo 4, this will likely entail reduced gore, fewer skeletal depictions, and the removal of certain religious references. It is almost certain that the Diablo 4 Necromancer class and its summoned skeletal minions will have a distinct appearance in the Chinese version to comply with these guidelines.
In related Diablo 4 news, Blizzard appears to be preparing for significant upcoming changes to its flagship ARPG. Content creators recently received a private preview of the game`s future direction. For the wider player base, Diablo 4 Season 9 is currently underway, with a new expansion confirmed for release next year.
