Daniel Craig’s Likeness Fueled Early Demos for 007: First Light

IO Interactive, the critically acclaimed Danish studio behind the Hitman series, is bringing James Bond back to video games with their upcoming title, 007: First Light. Acquiring the rights to such a prominent franchise was a considerable undertaking, and the studio employed an imaginative approach, essentially creating a “super-spy Frankenstein” by combining elements of Agent 47 with Daniel Craig`s likeness for their initial pitch.

Hakan Abrak, CEO of IOI and game director for First Light, elaborated in an interview that they developed a unique in-game demonstration. This demo successfully merged core gameplay mechanics from Hitman with the distinct essence of the James Bond universe.

Abrak revealed, “We actually inserted Daniel Craig into the demo. We simply modeled his head and placed it onto Agent 47`s body, purely for demonstration purposes, to convey the immersive and dynamic environments possible in an IO game.” This showcase was set within the familiar Hitman location of Sapienza, specifically within the clandestine virus laboratory situated beneath the picturesque coastal town.

Following Craig`s departure from the role in the 2021 film No Time To Die, casting the next James Bond was a crucial step for the game`s development. For 007: First Light, Irish actor Patrick Gibson has been cast as a younger, less experienced version of the MI6 operative. At 30 years old himself, and portraying Bond at the age of 26, Gibson becomes the youngest actor to embody the iconic character in a major production to date.

Narrative director Martin Emborg further explained the casting philosophy: “The process wasn`t about seeking a famous name to become `our Bond,` or someone who could simply carry this younger iteration of the character. Collaborating with big-name actors presents a different challenge. It`s less about discovering the character and more about saying, `Wouldn`t it be cool if X actor were Bond?` I don`t believe that approach was ever particularly appealing to us.”

This instance isn`t the first time Daniel Craig`s appearance has served to bridge the gap between James Bond`s cinematic portrayals and the gaming world. The 2010 remake of GoldenEye for the Nintendo GameCube utilized Craig`s face to modernize the character`s visual style, updating the original 1997 Nintendo 64 classic which featured Pierce Brosnan`s Bond.

007: First Light is slated for release on March 27, 2026. Pre-orders are currently available, including a deluxe edition that offers a golden gun as a bonus item.
