Dan Houser’s New Comic Series, American Caper, Now Available for Preorder

Dan Houser, widely recognized as a co-founder of Rockstar Games, is embarking on new creative ventures, preparing to launch both a novel and a comic book series. His upcoming novel is titled “A Better Paradise Volume One: An Aftermath,” while the new comic series is called “American Caper.” The inaugural issue of “American Caper” is set to release on November 12. It promises a captivating narrative intertwining the lives of a Mormon hitman, a lawyer with a penchant for gambling, and a Mexican beauty queen, whose destinies converge dramatically after a real estate transaction takes an unexpected turn. For those eager to dive into the story, the Kindle edition of the first issue is priced at $5.74.

Creative Minds Behind American Caper

Houser is collaborating with Lazlow, a veteran known for his contributions to the Grand Theft Auto series, who will also provide additional material for “American Caper.” The initial storyline is designed to span 12 issues and will be brought to life by a highly skilled team of illustrators. This team includes the Eisner Award-winning artist David Lapham (“Stray Bullets”), colorist Chris Anderson (“Lost Angels”), Lee Loughridge (“GI Joe”), and letterer Nate Piekos (“The Umbrella Academy”). Houser describes the series as a vibrant mix of corrupt business practices, incompetent politics, clumsy criminal acts, casual fashion, and misguided justice. He has hinted at a colorful ensemble of characters, ranging from a Wall Street billionaire who transforms into a cowboy to a “maniacal” figure driven by revenge.

During a recent panel at LA Comic-Con, Houser expressed his enthusiasm for the crime comedy genre. He remarked, “I love doing crime comedy, and after having developed numerous stories featuring carjackers and tough, resilient individuals, I wanted to craft a narrative centered on `degenerate criminals` from a completely fresh angle, set in a part of the world where creating a GTA game would be unimaginable.” He further elaborated, “The confusion between reality and the fantasies people harbor in their minds is a recurring theme in many stories, and I find it deeply intriguing. The contemporary rural American West, in particular, resonated with me as an interesting and compelling backdrop for a dark comedy.”

A Better Paradise: A Glimpse into Future Gaming

Houser’s other significant project, “A Better Paradise,” is scheduled for an October 14 release and will be available as both an ebook and an audiobook. This novel is an adaptation of an audio fiction series that first aired in 2024. It is set in the near future within the intriguing landscape of a video game company. The plot revolves around “Daisy`s Ark,” an advanced virtual world developed by the tech startup Tyburn Industria. This ambitious project was eventually suspended after a series of “unexpected and disturbing results” began to affect everyone involved. A decade later, the narrative picks up as development on “Daisy`s Ark” is surprisingly resumed.

While the original 12-episode audio series is freely accessible on various podcast platforms, the upcoming novel promises to offer deeper insights into the nascent stages of “Daisy`s Ark.” Both “American Caper” and “A Better Paradise” are among the current creative endeavors Houser is pursuing at Absurd Ventures. These projects follow his illustrious career at Rockstar Games, where he held the pivotal roles of head writer and creative director for hugely successful franchises such as Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption.

Following his departure from Rockstar Games, Dan Houser founded Absurd Ventures with the vision of developing a wide array of multimedia projects, encompassing animation, video games, graphic novels, and audio fiction.
