Crystal Dynamics, the renowned development studio famous for its work on the Tomb Raider franchise, has announced a new round of workforce reductions. This marks the second instance of layoffs for the company within the last six months. While the precise number of affected employees was not disclosed, this restructuring comes in the wake of the Perfect Dark reboot`s cancellation, a project the studio was actively co-developing.
In an official statement released on its LinkedIn account, the company underscored the difficulty of this decision. The post articulated: “This decision was not made lightly. It was necessary, however, to ensure the long-term health of our studio and core creative priorities in a continually shifting market.” This phrasing closely resembles the language used during a previous round of layoffs in March, which impacted 17 individuals.
Despite these internal changes, Crystal Dynamics confirmed that its most anticipated project, the forthcoming Tomb Raider game starring Lara Croft and set to be published by Amazon Games, remains “unaffected by this decision.” The studio had previously indicated earlier this year that both the new Tomb Raider title and the Perfect Dark reboot would be immune to any staff downsizing.
However, circumstances shifted significantly last month when Microsoft canceled the Perfect Dark reboot, subsequently leading to the closure of The Initiative, the other primary studio collaborating on the game. Adding to the series of changes, a planned Tomb Raider television show by Amazon has also reportedly been shelved. Beyond the iconic Tomb Raider series, Crystal Dynamics is also recognized for its contributions to other notable video game franchises, including Gex and Legacy of Kain.
