Classic Mario & Wario SNES Game Finally Arrives in the US via Switch Online

Nintendo Switch Online subscribers can now enjoy three new Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) titles, including a significant addition: Mario & Wario. This 1993 puzzle-platformer, notably developed by Game Freak before their Pokémon fame, is making its long-awaited debut in the United States, over three decades after its initial release in Japan. Intriguingly, the game has always featured English text, despite its delayed international launch.

Gameplay and Unique Controls

In Mario & Wario, players are tasked with guiding a bewildered Mario, who has a bucket stuck on his head courtesy of Wario, through 100 challenging levels. Players control a forest fairy to clear obstacles and lead Mario to safety. The game`s design originally required mouse input, a feature now adapted for the Nintendo Switch. On the current Switch console, users can simulate mouse controls by holding a Joy-Con controller on its side, providing a modern solution to its unique interface.

Other New Additions to the Library

Alongside Mario & Wario, Nintendo has also expanded the Switch Online SNES library with two other classic games:

  • Bubsy in: Claws Encounters of the Furred Kind: This title introduces players to the iconic, wisecracking bobcat, offering a nostalgic experience before the anticipated release of Bubsy 4D.
  • Fatal Fury Special: A robust fighting game that allows players to step into the shoes of various characters, including Axel Hawk, who was previously a CPU-only boss in the original Fatal Fury 2.

Expanding Retro Libraries and Membership Tiers

Nintendo continues to enhance its online service with more retro content. In recent months, the company has broadened its offerings:

  • Last month, the enigmatic Virtual Boy platform was integrated into the premium Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership, requiring a specific accessory for play.
  • Earlier this year, a selection of GameCube games also became available to subscribers of the Expansion Pack tier.

For those interested in subscribing, Nintendo Switch Online offers different membership options:

  • The basic tier costs $20 annually for individuals or $35 for a family plan.
  • The Expansion Pack tier, which includes additional retro libraries and other benefits, is priced at $50 annually for individuals and $80 for family plans.
