Previously, all characters announced for Invincible VS., a 3v3 tag fighter featuring heroes from Skybound`s Invincible universe, were enhanced superheroes. However, during New York Comic Con, Skybound and developer Quarter Up revealed a significant change: Cecil Stedman, head of the Global Defense Agency, has officially joined the game`s playable roster.
Creating a human character capable of battling formidable superhuman adversaries like Omni-Man and Invincible demanded a fresh design philosophy. Robert Kirkman, the creator of Invincible, along with several developers from Quarter Up, discussed the intricate process behind integrating Cecil and his distinctive capabilities into the game.
A Human Among Superheroes
Unlike the superpowered individuals on the roster, Cecil, being a `normal` human, compensates for a lack of inherent strength and speed by leveraging the extensive resources of his government agency for offensive capabilities. This concept was fundamental to his inclusion in Invincible VS., as his access to these resources transforms him into a highly potent opponent.
Executive producer Mike Willette explained, “While he doesn`t possess unlimited funds, Cecil extensively utilizes taxpayer money for his traversal. He can jump and teleport because, despite lacking the natural mobility of characters with double jumps and flight like other characters, his government backing ensures he can navigate the environment effectively.”
This advanced movement system allows Cecil to strategically control the battleground, a feature Willette notes aligns with the character`s persona as a master strategist. Willette further elaborated, “He wields projectiles with varied trajectories and a sonic mine that hovers before detonation, granting him substantial long-range versatility. He can effectively inundate the screen with attacks, akin to a bullet-hell scenario, and seamlessly transition into our combo system upon confirming a hit.”
Integrating a human character like Cecil into a lineup of superhumans presented challenges beyond just his moveset; he needed to visually convey a sense of capability against the powerful roster. Skybound art director Dan Eder detailed the team`s creative approaches to visually emphasize Cecil`s unique strength.
Eder explained, “Our question was how to make him appear imposing without the massive physique of characters like Omni-Man.” He added, “While we drew inspiration from the show, we underwent numerous iterations for each new character, making the artistic process both demanding and incredibly rewarding. We believe the final result is authentic to Cecil`s character and ensures he feels like a cohesive part of the roster, despite the visual disparities.”

Integrating into the Invincible Universe
Cecil`s introduction also brought the announcement of a unique story arc specifically crafted for Invincible VS. While the development team refrained from detailing the game`s precise placement in the overarching timeline, Robert Kirkman confirmed that Skybound and Quarter Up extensively collaborated to ensure the narrative felt authentic to the entire Invincible series.
Kirkman verified that “[Narrative director] Mike Rogers has been collaborating closely with Helen Leigh, a principal writer for the Invincible series and my co-writer for the Atom Eve game.” He assured, “The story mode for Invincible VS. logically aligns with the Invincible television series` narrative, and although specific details aren`t being disclosed yet, fans can anticipate a compelling experience designed to integrate seamlessly within that existing storyline.”
Rogers personally described the Invincible VS. narrative as a `standalone special` within the broader Invincible storyline. He commented, “It`s been a genuine pleasure collaborating with Helen and Robert, ensuring this story truly captures the essence of the Invincible universe.”
Unlike Atom Eve, which was a narrative adventure game centered solely on its namesake, Invincible VS.`s story mode presented the narrative team with a much wider array of characters to utilize. Kirkman finds the opportunity to explore these characters in novel interactions particularly appealing for such projects.
Kirkman stated, “I believe it`s exciting because it offers an expanded creative space for the team. The character interactions within this game`s story are, at times, quite unique to the universe. Some characters will engage with each other in ways not extensively seen in previous Invincible adaptations.”
Invincible VS. is slated for release in 2026 on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC. Cecil Stedman rounds out a growing roster of playable characters, which already features fan favorites such as Omni-Man, Invincible, Atom Eve, Rex Splode, Bulletproof, Thula, and Battle Beast.
