Developing in-house game engines is often challenging for many studios. Yet, Capcom has achieved considerable success with its proprietary RE Engine, which has powered all its games since Resident Evil 7 in 2017, including the forthcoming Pragmata. Interestingly, a seemingly minor detail—the exceptionally long hair of Pragmata`s co-protagonist, Diana—necessitated specific modifications to the RE Engine, as confirmed by producer Naoto Oyama.

In a VGC interview concerning potential future RE Engine capabilities, Oyama highlighted Diana`s hair as a prime example. He stated that the RE Engine serves as a fundamental framework for Capcom`s games, allowing the team to integrate new features as needed. Diana`s intricate, flowing hair, composed of individual strands, is a clear visual representation of such an enhancement.
Oyama elaborated that while prior games typically utilized technology better suited for shorter hair, Diana`s long hair represents a breakthrough achieved with Pragmata, thanks to the RE Engine team`s dedicated support. When playfully asked if this meant long-haired zombies might appear in future titles, Oyama humorously responded, “It`s hard to say.”
Initially unveiled in 2020, Pragmata faced multiple delays, first to 2023, then indefinitely. However, five years post-announcement, the game is now slated for a 2026 launch, though a precise release date remains undisclosed. For those interested, a hands-on preview of Pragmata offers further insights.
Upon its release, Pragmata will be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC platforms.
