Monster Hunter Wilds initially launched strong in early 2025, poised to be one of the year`s top sellers. However, the Capcom franchise has since faced significant challenges with declining sales, prompting the publisher to expedite the release of its first major expansion.
Capcom has now moved the expansion`s launch date from late September to August 13. This upcoming update is set to introduce a new difficulty tier, an overhauled rewards system, rebalanced weapons, and other significant additions.
Recent quarterly reports released by Capcom for investors paint a challenging picture for Monster Hunter Wilds` recent performance. Between April 1 and June 30, Wilds only sold 477,000 units, just slightly surpassing its predecessor, Monster Hunter Rise, which sold 389,000 copies in the same period. Interestingly, Devil May Cry 5 significantly outpaced Wilds, moving 1,782,000 units, potentially benefiting from its Netflix anime adaptation.
Despite recent struggles, Monster Hunter Wilds has achieved a global sales figure of 10,585,000 units since its initial release earlier this year. Player dissatisfaction has been evident, particularly concerning the PC port. Notably, Monster Hunter World garnered more concurrent players on Steam than Wilds during the summer. Many negative Steam reviews highlighted performance problems and a perceived lack of engaging endgame content.
While a recent major update from Capcom did lead to a temporary surge in Monster Hunter Wilds players on Steam, not all underlying issues have been fully resolved. The effectiveness of this upcoming expansion in revitalizing the game`s community and sales remains to be seen.
