Activision has reinstated Call of Duty: WWII on the Microsoft Store and Xbox PC App, over a month after its unannounced removal. The 2017 title is now once again accessible to PC Game Pass subscribers. Activision previously stated the game was pulled on July 4th to investigate “an issue,” but has yet to provide further details regarding its month-long absence.
Although Activision has not officially confirmed the cause, players widely suspect the game was affected by severe Remote Code Execution (RCE) attacks, which could compromise users` PCs. A similar security breach in 2022 led to the temporary shutdown of the entire Dark Souls trilogy.
It`s important to note that the security problem specifically impacted the PC version of Call of Duty: WWII. The Xbox version, which joined Game Pass in late June, remained available throughout this period.
About Call of Duty: WWII
Developed by Sledgehammer Games, Call of Duty: WWII was significant for being the franchise`s first return to a full World War II setting since 2008`s Call of Duty: World at War. Memorable moments include its intense D-Day opening, reminiscent of Saving Private Ryan, and a suspenseful undercover mission in a Parisian German building.
Players embody Ronald “Red” Daniels, fighting alongside squadmates voiced by talents such as Josh Duhamel, Jeffrey Pierce, Jonathan Tucker, and Brett Zimmerman. The campaign`s immersive intensity is heightened by the absence of automatic health regeneration.
Future of Call of Duty
Looking ahead, the upcoming Call of Duty title is Black Ops 7. Activision recently announced the cancellation of its “Carry Forward” program, meaning items like operators and skins from Black Ops 6 will not transfer to Black Ops 7. The publisher also acknowledged player feedback regarding the series` perceived deviation from its core identity as a military shooter, often interpreted as a critique of its more outlandish cosmetic items, though Activision did not explicitly state this.
