Call of Duty Introduces Mandatory Age Verification for Players

Activision, the publisher behind the globally popular Call of Duty franchise, has initiated a new policy requiring players to verify their date of birth upon logging into the game. This significant change was initially brought to light by reports from CharlieIntel.

This age verification measure is largely consistent with the “Mature” (M) rating (indicating content suitable for ages 17 and up) that Call of Duty titles typically receive from the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) in the United States. This rating is often a result of the games` depictions of blood, gore, strong language, mature themes, and occasionally, drug use. For example, recent entries like Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 and Warzone have featured various operators known for their association with cannabis culture, including figures like Cheech and Chong, Jay and Silent Bob, Seth Rogen, and Snoop Dogg.

In a statement provided to CharlieIntel, Activision clarified that this step is being undertaken “in accordance with our efforts to deliver a positive community experience as detailed in the Call of Duty Code of Conduct.” However, the precise impetus for implementing this requirement now remains somewhat ambiguous, though it could potentially stem from new legal or regulatory obligations.

A critical point for players, particularly those under legal age, is that underage individuals will be required to obtain parental consent to continue accessing the game. Furthermore, a stark warning has been issued: failure to provide a valid birth date by November 10, 2025, may result in the permanent deletion of the Call of Duty account.

It is noteworthy that, at present, Activision does not appear to be demanding official identification for this age verification process. Players are reportedly able to manually input their birth date without requiring additional documented proof.

As the Call of Duty series maintains its annual release schedule, Treyarch`s Black Ops 7 has been announced as this year`s main title. While its official rating is still pending, it is widely expected to also be classified with a “Mature” rating, with a comprehensive reveal of the game anticipated later this summer.
