Call Of Duty: Black Ops 7 Introduces Combat Roll, Player Reception Mixed

Activision`s upcoming Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 and its battle royale counterpart, Warzone, are set to integrate a new combat-roll feature. This addition echoes a similar mechanic anticipated in Battlefield 6. Initial glimpses of the combat roll in action have emerged, drawing varied reactions, with some players expressing dissatisfaction with its visual presentation.

During the recent Call of Duty: Next event, footage showcased the combat roll ability, revealing a dynamic camera shift from a first-person to a third-person perspective during the maneuver. This particular design choice has been a point of contention, with some critics labeling its execution as “clunky.”

Unlocking the Combat Roll in Call of Duty

The combat roll mechanic will not be a default ability for players in Black Ops 7 or Warzone. Instead, players will need to acquire it by unlocking the “Mountaineer” perk.

This new movement option is intended to allow players to mitigate damage sustained from falls of “considerable height.” Its integration into Warzone is planned as part of the substantial Season 1 update, though a specific release date for this update has not yet been finalized.

Activision has communicated that the development team`s objective is to maintain the competitiveness of the Mountaineer perk by granting it a multifaceted influence on player movement. This means players will be required to actively invest in and utilize this perk to experience its various enhancements to mobility.

Battlefield`s Precedent

Battlefield 6 is also confirmed to feature its own combat-roll mechanic. Much like the Call of Duty iteration, some early feedback suggests that Battlefield 6`s roll animation might also induce feelings of queasiness in players. It`s worth noting that the combat roll isn`t a novel concept for the Battlefield franchise; Battlefield 5, released in 2018, included a comparable system.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 is scheduled for a November 14 launch, with a multiplayer beta commencing on October 2. Conversely, Battlefield 6 is slated for an October 10 release across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. This year marks a significant moment as it`s the first time since 2021 that new installments from both of these highly popular first-person shooter franchises are launching within the same calendar year.
