Gearbox Software has unveiled a new character short, titled “Yolt,” for the highly anticipated looter-shooter, Borderlands 4. This video serves as an introduction to Rafa the Exo-Soldier, showcasing his abilities—including the formidable energy-based Arc-knives deployed from his exosuit—just moments before he decides to sever ties with the ethically questionable Tediore Corporation.
The short begins with Rafa proudly presenting his new exoskeleton at a live Tediore Corp. showcase. However, the tone shifts dramatically when his commanding officer reveals unsettling details about the suit, such as its capacity to remain operational even after the wearer`s death, and the corporation`s aggressive cost-cutting initiatives. This revelation quickly erupts into a scene of comically violent chaos, as Rafa transforms from a disciplined soldier into a destructive force, obliterating enemies within seconds.
A striking aspect of Rafa`s character short is its notably darker undertone. While it retains the signature campy and over-the-top elements consistent with previous Borderlands titles, the video introduces a more serious exploration of underlying themes. This suggests that Borderlands 4 might not only deliver its characteristic humor but also offer an engaging, character-driven narrative for players to experience this September.
Borderlands 4 is scheduled for release on September 12 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. A version for the Nintendo Switch 2 is slated to launch later, on October 3, 2025.
