As Borderlands 4`s release approaches after a seven-year hiatus, Gearbox President Randy Pitchford has once again sparked discussion with unconventional statements. His recent comments, suggesting players might profit by reselling a Borderlands-themed Fortnite skin, could inadvertently lead to an account ban from Epic Games.
Pitchford shared on X (formerly Twitter) his recollection of the high demand for the Psycho Bandit Fortnite skin. He then hinted that reselling the upcoming Mad Moxxi skin on platforms like eBay could similarly be a profitable venture for players.
Indeed, the Psycho Bandit Fortnite skin gained immense popularity in 2019, largely due to its initial brief availability as a promotional item for Borderlands 3. Following its limited appearance in the Epic Games Store, the Psycho Bandit skin was not officially purchasable again within Fortnite until its re-release in April 2025.
The Mad Moxxi Fortnite skin will be accessible to those who pre-order Borderlands 4 via the Epic Games Store, and also available for a standalone purchase for a limited period starting September 29. Nevertheless, this skin is not anticipated to achieve the same level of virtual scarcity as the Psycho Bandit. Crucially, attempting to resell skins on eBay or similar third-party sites violates Epic Games` terms of service, making it an unfeasible strategy.
Earlier this year, Pitchford had previously suggested that fans would “find a way” to purchase Borderlands 4 even if it were priced at $80. These comments drew criticism, despite Pitchford also highlighting that Borderlands 4`s development budget was more than double that of its predecessor, Borderlands 3.
Borderlands 4 is scheduled for its official launch on September 12, available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC platforms. Players on the Switch 2 will see the game`s release slightly later, on October 3.
