World of Warcraft developer Blizzard Entertainment has initiated legal proceedings against one of the most prominent private WoW servers, Turtle WoW. The lawsuit alleges widespread copyright infringement and claims the server is actively working to “cannibalize and disrupt Blizzard’s WoW player community.”
Turtle WoW, operational since 2018, offers an ambitious reimagining of the 2006 “vanilla” era of World of Warcraft. It distinguishes itself with fan-made expansions, unique playable races and classes, and custom zones. The project recently gained significant attention following the announcement of Turtle WoW 2.0, an ambitious undertaking to recreate its classic WoW experience using Unreal Engine 5. A recent update from Turtle WoW via social media reported that one of its server launches successfully attracted an impressive 13,000 concurrent players.
Filed in California on August 29, Blizzard’s lawsuit contends that Turtle WoW’s creators have built “an entire business on large-scale, egregious, and ongoing infringement of Blizzard’s intellectual property.” While playing on the private server is free, it does feature an in-game shop where players can donate to the developers in exchange for premium currency.
The lawsuit further highlights what Blizzard perceives as a deliberate escalation of efforts by Turtle WoW to attract players away from the official game. This includes an increased social media presence, strategic partnerships with video game influencers, and the aggressive promotion of its new version, Turtle WoW 2.0.
Blizzard’s legal action targets the individuals behind Turtle WoW, despite the company admitting that it is not entirely certain of their exact identities. The lawsuit states that Turtle WoW purports to operate from Kazakhstan, but Blizzard suspects this entity is merely a “shell company” designed to obscure the identities of the individual defendants and act as a conduit for financial transactions. The legal document lists several specific defendants from various countries allegedly involved, alongside “Doe Defendants” whose true identities currently remain unknown to Blizzard.
In a direct response to the lawsuit, Turtle WoW team member Torta, who is explicitly named in Blizzard’s filing, posted a statement on the server’s Discord channel a day after the lawsuit was filed, unequivocally declaring that the private server is “here to stay.”
Torta’s statement reiterated the team`s resilience, emphasizing, “Challenges come to us often, and each time we are prepared to face them.” It concluded with a promise to remain “fully committed to delivering the Turtle WoW experience that you’ve come to love over the years.”
This legal challenge is not Blizzard’s first confrontation with a private World of Warcraft server. The company famously shut down the popular Nostalrius server in 2016. Interestingly, Blizzard itself later launched WoW Classic in 2019, an official old-school version of the game that closely mirrored the authentic vanilla experience Nostalrius had sought to preserve for its dedicated player base.
