Bella Ramsey Discusses Neil Druckmann’s Reduced Involvement in The Last of Us Series

Bella Ramsey, the star of HBO`s The Last of Us adaptation, has shared her thoughts on Neil Druckmann`s decision to step back from the show. She affirmed that despite Druckmann`s decreased active role, the series aims to uphold the original game`s essence and integrity.

Speaking to Variety, Ramsey explained, “The world of The Last of Us is his creation, and therefore his vision and creative input won`t simply vanish in Season 3 just because he`s not as actively involved. It will forever remain his brainchild.” She further emphasized, “In every aspect of what we do, we are always honoring the game and Neil`s creation. While his presence on set will certainly be missed, his spirit truly embodies the story.”

Earlier this month, Druckmann announced his departure from his primary role in the TV series. His focus will now shift to writing and directing Naughty Dog`s upcoming game, titled Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet. Druckmann described his experience co-creating the television series as a “career highlight” and expressed his honor in collaborating with Craig Mazin on the project. Craig Mazin, for his part, will continue his involvement with The Last of Us for its forthcoming third season, which may potentially be the show`s final installment.

Season 3 is currently in production, though an official release date has not yet been confirmed. The upcoming season is expected to center around Abby`s narrative. When questioned about Ellie`s screen time in Season 3, Ramsey playfully responded, “I sort of know, but I can`t tell you, I`m afraid.”

The third season is tentatively scheduled for a 2027 release, but it remains uncertain whether this will conclude the series. HBO executive Casey Bloys commented, “Craig is still figuring out if it will be two more seasons or one more extended season. A decision hasn`t been made yet, and I`m following Craig`s lead on that.”

Notably, The Last of Us Season 2 recently received 16 Emmy nominations, including a prestigious nod for Best Drama. This builds on the first season`s impressive 24 nominations, bringing the show`s total Emmy nominations to a remarkable 40 across its initial two seasons.
