The highly anticipated open beta for Battlefield 6 is just around the corner, having already attracted an impressive 10,000 concurrent players on one platform, even before the servers officially went live. This eagerness highlights strong player interest, but it also raises questions about the role of skill-based matchmaking (SBMM) in online play. According to EA, while player skill will indeed be a factor in determining matchups, it will not be the primary or sole determinant.
An EA representative informed CharlieIntel that Battlefield 6`s matchmaking process will prioritize factors such as the player`s geographic location, network ping, and server availability, in addition to “some skill factor.” It was also clarified that the specific weight of these matchmaking criteria will vary depending on the chosen game mode and the required player counts for that mode.
Earlier this month, Alexia Christofi, a producer for Battlefield 6, shared insights into the community`s feedback regarding server browsers. Key requests included a desire for persistent servers, a stronger sense of community, the ability to play together easily, options to select specific maps and modes, filtering by ping and server fullness, and robust support for regions with lower player populations. Christofi also previously confirmed that cross-play functionality can be toggled on or off, and that console players will generally be kept separate from PC players, unless additional players are needed to fill a lobby.
Based on the current information, MP1st suggests that modes like Conquest might prioritize matchmaking based on server fullness to ensure quick game starts. However, it`s anticipated that any ranked or highly competitive matches would lean more heavily on skill-based criteria rather than geographical proximity. If this speculation holds true, Battlefield 6`s matchmaking system would largely align with practices seen in previous installments of the franchise. Nevertheless, without further official details from EA, this remains speculative for now.
The first open beta phase for Battlefield 6 is scheduled to commence on August 7 for early access participants, expanding to all players on August 9. The full game release is set for October 10, launching on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Curiously, the only other major title releasing on the same day is Barbie Horse Trails, a humorous coincidence that has led some staff to jokingly dub the shared release date as “Barbiefield.”
