Battlefield 2042 Development: Optimizing for Xbox Series S

hasWatermark

The Xbox Series S console, being less powerful than its counterparts like the Xbox Series X and PS5, presented a significant optimization challenge for EA and Battlefield Studios during the development of Battlefield 2042. However, Technical Director Christian Buhl explained that adapting the game for the Series S was comparable to managing diverse performance requirements across various PC configurations.

In an interview, Buhl confirmed that Battlefield 2042 on Xbox Series S does not provide distinct performance and quality settings, but it consistently achieves a smooth 60 frames per second at 1080p resolution. He attributed this to the Series S being a “less powerful system.”

Buhl emphasized that memory was the “biggest challenge” when developing for the Xbox Series S, which features 10GB of system memory compared to the Xbox Series X`s 16GB (alongside varying memory speeds). He reiterated that while challenging, the experience was akin to optimizing for diverse PC hardware. He also mentioned that during the game`s beta, many PC players ran Battlefield 2042 on minimum specifications.

Developers have previously expressed frustrations regarding the Xbox Series S, with some even suggesting Microsoft remove the obligation to support the console. A notable example was Baldur`s Gate 3, whose Xbox Series X|S release was delayed compared to the PS5 version due to technical difficulties related to the Series S.

Recently, Battlefield Studios revealed details about Battlefield 2042`s battle royale mode, including the instant elimination by the shrinking play zone. There is speculation that single-player mode information might be released at the Tokyo Game Show later this month. Battlefield 2042 is set for an October 10 launch across PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
