The classic Intellivision brand is receiving a modern revival, spearheaded by its historic competitor, Atari. Introducing the Intellivision Sprint, a new system that comes pre-loaded with 45 beloved retro games, celebrating the legacy of the console that once stood as a formidable rival to the original Atari 2600. Atari has commenced pre-orders for this new console, which is set to launch on December 5th, with a retail price of $150.
In an official press release, Atari confirmed that the Intellivision Sprint was developed through a collaborative effort with Plaion. The new console boasts two wireless controllers and includes a USB-A port designed for expanding its game library. The pre-installed collection of games features fan favorites such as Baseball, Soccer, Astrosmash, Boulder Dash, and Sea Battle. Additionally, each title is complemented by two dedicated controller overlays included in the package.
Matt Burett, Atari`s VP of Strategic Operations, shared his excitement regarding the launch: “We’re thrilled to celebrate Intellivision`s 45th anniversary, and what better way to honor it than by bringing back this innovative console for fans to experience once again? Becoming caretakers of such an important brand is both a big responsibility and a very fun expansion of our work at Atari.”
This initiative follows Atari`s acquisition of the Intellivision brand in May 2024, which also included a significant portion of its game catalog. Prior to this, the Intellivision Amico was positioned as the brand`s planned resurgence; however, that console remains unreleased and will no longer bear the Intellivision name.
Atari has been actively re-engaging with its own heritage, exemplified by the late 2023 launch of the Atari 2600+. This updated system brought modern features, including widescreen support, to the classic console experience. In the same year, the company expanded its portfolio by acquiring developer Digital Eclipse, known for its work on various classic game collections, including the upcoming Mortal Kombat Legacy Collection.
