As Astro Bot marks its one-year anniversary on September 6, 2025, we take a moment to consider the profound impact this charming robot has had on a new wave of emerging gamers.
Over three decades ago, I experienced a profound connection with gaming. During a visit to extended family, I was captivated by a boxy gray-and-black video game console, connected to a similar CRT television. While I had encountered video games in arcades and played basic Mac games, Super Mario Bros. was a revelation. Its intuitive controls, diverse levels, and unforgettable music left a lasting impression. By the end of our visit, my siblings and I were determined to persuade our parents to purchase a Nintendo Entertainment System, driven by our desire for more Mario adventures. That moment laid the foundation for a lifelong passion.
Many children of the 1980s share similar origin stories for their gaming enthusiasm. Decades later, as a parent, I witness Astro Bot enchanting my own children in a way that mirrors my initial experience with Mario. I am certain that in the years to come, they will point to Astro as the spark that ignited their passion for gaming.
For me, that early encounter with Mario profoundly shaped my life`s path. It influenced my hobbies, interests, social circles, and even my career. It`s difficult to envision becoming a professional games writer without having developed that early fascination. While I don`t expect my children to become game critics, their experience highlights the significance of these formative gaming moments and their potential for unexpected long-term effects.
Prior to Astro Bot`s launch, I had the opportunity for an extensive hands-on session at Team Asobi`s Tokyo studio. While it seemed like a typical studio visit, there was an unmistakable enthusiasm surrounding this particular game, a clear sign that Asobi recognized its unique potential. Game director Nicolas Doucet emphasized the importance of creating a game that was both engaging and accessible for younger players. Astro`s simple robot design was intentionally crafted to be easily drawable by children, and the character communicates through expressions and sounds, making the narrative comprehensible even to pre-readers. The platforming levels offer a well-balanced difficulty curve for new or younger players, complemented by optional, more demanding challenges for seasoned gamers.
Doucet reflected, “I recall the first few video games I ever played; their exceptional design imprinted on me for life.” He continued, “Both aspects are crucial. When developing a platformer, we must accommodate a wide range of players. This principle has guided not only our game development but also the very culture of our team.”
Though Mario wasn`t explicitly named during my studio visit, its influence was palpable. Team Asobi clearly aimed to create a game with exceptional playability and enduring appeal.
Their efforts bore fruit. A year on, Astro Bot remains a household favorite. My youngest child, still learning to read, initially referred to it as `the robot game` but now knows the character as Astro. The levels provide a perfect balance of challenge and attainability, offering a rewarding sense of progress and achievement. He frequently amazes us with his adeptness, even in later, more difficult stages.
My older children gladly join in, assisting with tricky sections or tackling their own demanding challenge levels. They enjoy confronting bosses as a team, sharing laughter and encouragement through tougher trials and favorite stage replays. Even when one of them accidentally erased my 100% complete save file—no names mentioned, they know who they are—I accepted it with good humor, knowing we could simply begin a fresh adventure.

It`s important to acknowledge that Astro Bot may not achieve the same level of ubiquity for my children`s generation as Mario did for mine. In the 1980s, game releases were infrequent, and mascots were rare. Today, children engage with video games through diverse platforms—mobile devices, tablets, and consoles—featuring well-established franchises such as Minecraft and Fortnite. While nearly every gamer from the 80s remembers Super Mario, Astro`s influence will be more distributed due to the many entry points into gaming. Astro may not be a universal icon of its era, and its long-term impact comparable to Mario`s remains to be seen. Nevertheless, it holds a unique significance for me because of what it has brought to my family.
Astro Bot has garnered considerable success over the past year, achieving strong sales, inspiring a range of merchandise (including special-edition controllers), and claiming the top award at The Game Awards 2024. Yet, for me, its significance is deeply personal. Astro Bot awakened a sense of wonder and playful curiosity in my children, broadening their interest in video games. Watching them play transports me back in time, seeing a reflection of my younger self—mesmerized by the soft glow of an old television, my imagination racing with the endless potential of this captivating new medium.
