Arkheron: The New PvP Isometric Game Unveiled

In an industry often dominated by established series, continuations, and remakes, the debut of a completely new intellectual property from a fresh studio is a welcome change. Bonfire Studios, co-founded by Rob Pardo, the renowned lead designer of World of Warcraft, is set to launch Arkheron. This original PvP isometric title features free-aim combat within an extraordinary world, showcasing breathtaking character aesthetics.

For a long time, details about Arkheron remained scarce, but information regarding its world and innovative top-down gameplay mechanics is now emerging. Here`s a comprehensive overview of Arkheron.

What is Arkheron about?

Arkheron is depicted as an otherworldly dimension where participants assume the role of an “Echo”—a spectral, anonymous entity. These Echos represent the spirits of individuals who passed away with unresolved matters. Every match commences with the player`s unarmed Echo appearing at the base of an enigmatic tower, convinced that reaching its summit will grant them ultimate tranquility.

Since Arkheron involves competitive team-based play, advancement through the tower requires vanquishing opposing teams in battle, utilizing weaponry and protective gear discovered within its confines. Victory allows your team to ascend, while defeat necessitates a return to the tower`s lowest level.

Where is Arkheron set?

Although Arkheron prioritizes player-versus-player combat over a deep interactive storyline, its creators have crafted an intricate setting within the spectral dark tower for players to navigate through. This tower feels both known and foreign to the Echoes, as it embodies the material representation of their pre-death existence.

The bizarre essence of this peculiar realm dictates that every level of the tower is comprised of distinct environments, sculpted by these past memories. Consequently, players will contend across various unusual maps as they climb higher.

Gameplay in Arkheron

Arkheron`s primary game mode, Ascension Royale, involves fifteen teams of three players competing to capture beacons on various maps. This process advances them towards the tower`s summit across three rounds. Securing a beacon not only moves players to the subsequent floor but also revives any eliminated teammates. Teams are progressively eliminated until a decisive three-versus-three confrontation determines the ultimate victor at the tower`s peak.

A notable and unexpected feature of this top-down game is its flexible camera system. This allows players to freely adjust their viewpoint to precisely aim shots, resembling a shooter game – an innovative combat perspective uncommon in prior isometric titles.

Keen attention to Arkheron`s immersive sound design is crucial, as it provides auditory cues for rival teams, monsters, and other subtle indicators essential for victory. Regarding creatures, players should be cautious of “The Fury,” an enormous, unkillable bird-like statue monster. This beast emerges to wreak havoc across the map before disappearing, acting as an environmental hazard that compels teams to quickly adjust to the ensuing destruction.

Unlike conventional battle royale games where players pre-select gear, Arkheron mandates exploration within the tower to assemble one`s arsenal. This ensures unique gameplay experiences in every match, as Bonfire Studios has filled the game with diverse and extraordinary “Relics”—weapons and armor pieces. Players are limited to carrying four Relics: two weapons and two armor items.

Every Relic possesses both a primary and secondary action, enabling players to utilize various special abilities or enhancements simultaneously. This flexibility allows for tailoring skills to suit individual playstyles within each match, fostering dynamic gameplay instead of relying on a single character class or loadout. During a press event, the studio demonstrated examples such as a massive ice hammer, a ruby-tipped crossbow, and an enchanted golden staff. It was also noted that while Relics can be combined freely, most items are part of distinct sets of four.

What occurs upon gathering a complete set of these Relics?

How to play as an Eternal in Arkheron

After exploring the map to gather a complete collection of these ancient relics, reminiscent of a supernatural treasure hunter, Arkheron presents players with a choice: either deploy these potent items individually or assemble them for specific bonuses. Combining two items from a set in a mixed build grants a set bonus, while collecting all four items from a set allows for transformation into an “Eternal”—a distinct entity (unrelated to cinematic portrayals).

Eternals are heroic figures who, unlike the typical anonymous Echoes controlled by players, maintain their sentience post-mortem. They acquire a powerful fifth ability, significantly enhancing a player`s combat presence. However, this transformation comes with a strategic compromise: once an Eternal form is adopted, players cannot alter their equipment or abilities for the remainder of the match.

During the preview, we were shown Irenna, one of the Eternals—an ice warrior characterized by white hair, intense blue eyes, and a large ice spike on each shoulder. Her formidable appearance was completed by a colossal ice hammer adorned with gargoyle-like visages.

Who developed Arkheron?

Bonfire Studios, co-founded in 2016 by Rob Pardo, former Chief Creative Officer at Blizzard Entertainment, is the developer behind Arkheron. Prior to the game`s official reveal, Pardo informed the media that the concept for Arkheron emerged from an internal process where every team member had the chance to propose game ideas. These initial pitches were then refined into seven fundamental concepts, which were further developed until Arkheron was unanimously chosen as the most compelling and exciting project.

When is Arkheron out?

Although an official release date for Arkheron has not yet been announced, the game is slated for availability on PC, Xbox Series X & S, and PlayStation 5 in 2026. Nevertheless, PC gamers had the opportunity to participate in a Steam playtest from Friday, September 19th, through Sunday, September 21st.
