Following the significant success of Andy Weir’s novel, Project Hail Mary, a brand new video game has been announced, personally penned by the series creator himself.
Titled Project Hail Mary: Journey Among the Stars, the game offers a unique mixed reality experience, seamlessly blending virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) elements. Developed by Maze Theory, a studio known for titles like Doctor Who: The Edge of Time and Peaky Blinders: The King’s Ransom, the project was created in collaboration with Amazon MGM. Players will step into the shoes of Ryland Grace in an entirely new storyline crafted by Andy Weir, focusing on averting a major disaster during a crucial point in the original narrative.
Andy Weir expressed that fans have been eager for more content since the creation of Project Hail Mary. He noted that this game represents the first opportunity for fans to engage with the universe beyond the book and upcoming movie, through a mixed reality experience.
As Ryland Grace, players face the critical mission of preventing system failures aboard the spacecraft. They will receive crucial assistance from the beloved companion, Rocky, whose trust, cooperation, and ingenuity are vital for the Hail Mary‘s survival. The game aims to make Rocky’s character feel dynamic and responsive, moving beyond his alien physiology. Interactions, such as a simple thumbs-up, will trigger reactions mirroring his personality from the source material, including his unique “fist my bump.”
The game’s trailer showcases a smooth integration of augmented and virtual reality, transforming the player’s physical space into the Hail Mary‘s cockpit. Features like a functional joystick for ship control and realistic zero-gravity physics are highlighted. Project Hail Mary: Journey Among the Stars is slated for release on MR and VR platforms in late 2026.
