Analogue 3D Console Faces Third Delay, Now Shipping Late 2025

The eagerly awaited Analogue 3D console has unfortunately been delayed for a third time, pushing its release target to the fourth quarter of 2025. This modern rendition of the Nintendo 64 was initially slated for shipment before the end of August of the current year. Previous postponements were linked to ongoing uncertainties regarding US tariffs, but the most recent delay is attributed to an unexpected issue in the production process.

In their official statement, the manufacturer indicated that the new Q4 2025 delivery window was “intentionally set conservatively.” While Analogue did not disclose the precise nature of the production problem, they affirmed that the development is nearly complete. The company emphasized its dedication, stating: “Analogue 3D has been in development for 4 years, obsessively. It’s at 99%. Hardware, system, packaging–the full kit–been set for months. The last 1% is where we’re focused.”

The sleek Analogue 3D console, designed to bring the N64 experience to modern 4K displays.

The Analogue 3D is an advanced FPGA (Field-Programmable Gate Array) device specifically designed to deliver an authentic Nintendo 64 gameplay experience in high-definition 4K resolution on contemporary televisions. Pre-orders for the $250 console sold out rapidly after becoming available last October. Despite earlier speculation about a potential price increase due to tariff concerns, Analogue decided against it. Customers who managed to secure a pre-order can anticipate their console arriving late next year. Analogue has also provided assurance that pre-orders can be canceled for a full refund if desired.

The Analogue 3D boasts full compatibility with all original N64 accessories. While the console itself does not include a controller, Analogue partnered with 8BitDo to produce a reimagined wireless Nintendo 64 controller. The 8BitDo 64 Bluetooth Controller, launched in late July, is readily available for purchase at $40.

This forthcoming console is engineered to emulate “the essence of CRT” televisions when displayed on a 4K screen. Users will have the flexibility to switch between various display modes, each meticulously crafted to reproduce the unique visual characteristics of classic, old-school TV sets.

The design of the Analogue 3D, available in elegant white and black variants, perfectly complements the aesthetic of the Analogue Pocket, the company`s highly regarded modernized Game Boy console. The clean lines and classic color options are evident in the console`s detailed images.

A closer look at the Analogue 3D console`s refined design.

With its specialized display modes, gamers can revisit their cherished N64 game library in ultra-high definition, enjoying faithfully rendered scanlines, shadow masks, and other visual effects distinctive to CRT televisions. Analogue claims the 3D offers a 10-fold increase over the N64`s native 320×240 resolution, all without any perceptible lag. Furthermore, the console is region-free, supporting the entire N64 game catalog.

The bespoke Analogue 3D Operating System (OS) takes design cues from the Analogue Pocket, incorporating “Library” and “Memories” hubs. The Library acts as a comprehensive catalog, populating with new game entries each time a cartridge is loaded for the first time. The Memories section is dedicated to storing save states and screenshots, enabling players to save their progress at any moment and instantly return to that point via the menu system.

In addition to the four classic controller ports on the front, the console`s rear panel is equipped with an HDMI port, two USB ports, and an SD card slot that supports SDHC cards up to 16GB. The Analogue 3D package includes an HDMI cable, a USB cord, and a USB-C power supply. It also features integrated dual-band Wi-Fi for over-the-air firmware updates and supports both standard Bluetooth and Bluetooth LE connectivity.

Analogue has invested over four years in developing a precise FPGA-based solution to accurately recreate the N64 experience. This meticulous development process aims to provide a substantial leap in accuracy and performance compared to traditional N64 emulators.

8BitDo 64 Bluetooth Controller

The 8BitDo 64 Bluetooth Controller offers a modern take on the classic N64 design.

The 8BitDo 64 Bluetooth Controller provides extensive compatibility, working seamlessly with Nintendo Switch, upcoming Switch 2, Windows, and Android devices, supporting both D-input and S-input modes. It faithfully reproduces all of the N64’s iconic controls: the joystick, C-buttons, an authentic D-pad, A/B buttons, R/L shoulder buttons, and two Z triggers. The inclusion of an extra Z trigger enhances its versatility for modern gaming titles.

A significant enhancement is its Hall Effect joystick with an original-style gate, which represents a notable improvement over the notoriously problematic N64 controller joystick, often susceptible to stick drift and wear over time. True to other 8BitDo controllers, this model offers a high degree of customization, accessible through 8BitDo’s Ultimate Software, allowing users to fine-tune various operational details.

For those who prefer the feel of original hardware, pre-owned N64 controllers are available from various retailers. While many inexpensive third-party N64 controllers can be found, consistent and reliable performance with these clone devices is not always guaranteed. A noteworthy wired alternative in this category is the Hyperkin Captain, priced at $20 and available in several translucent color options.

Considering that many Nintendo 64 games were designed with multiplayer in mind, it is advisable to have a few extra controllers to take full advantage of the Analogue 3D’s four controller ports. The console supports up to four players simultaneously, using either wireless or wired controllers, or a combination of both, providing flexibility for an optimal multi-player gaming experience with, for example, multiple 8BitDo controllers.
