An Unavailable Mario Game Just Got a Switch 2 Update

The Mario game collection, Super Mario 3D All-Stars, received an unexpected update, yet it primarily serves as a stark reminder that Nintendo ceased its sales over four years ago. This version 1.1.3 update is specifically designed to enhance the game`s performance on the Nintendo Switch 2, with Nintendo`s support website stating that it “addresses several issues” to “improve gameplay on Nintendo Switch 2.”

However, the update notes do not specify what issues were resolved or how gameplay is improved on the Switch 2. Super Mario 3D All-Stars previously received an update on June 3, just before the Switch 2`s launch, but Nintendo used the same vague wording back then. Notably, 3D All-Stars is not listed among the Switch 1 games that received free Switch 2 enhancements.

A Reddit user who played 3D All-Stars after the Switch 2 update reported that the game still runs at 1080p in docked mode, and the UI might have received a resolution upscale. Other users pointed out that Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine continue to run at 30fps post-update.

Initially launched in September 2020 for the Nintendo Switch to commemorate Mario`s 35th anniversary, Super Mario 3D All-Stars featured Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, and Super Mario Galaxy. Infamously, the game was only available for purchase for approximately six months before being removed from stores and delisted from the Nintendo eShop. Nintendo applied the same policy to the battle royale title Super Mario Bros. 35, discontinuing access to it after the conclusion of Mario`s 35th-anniversary celebrations in late March 2021.

GameSpot`s review awarded Super Mario 3D All-Stars an 8/10, describing the compilation as “a worthwhile collection” despite acknowledging its “presentational shortcomings.”

As the 40th anniversary of Super Mario Bros. approaches this September, fans are hopeful for a re-release of Super Mario 3D All-Stars, ideally with Switch 2 enhancements and the inclusion of Super Mario Galaxy 2, which was conspicuously absent from the original collection.

However, Nintendo is an unpredictable company that can act without warning. Perhaps Nintendo has something significant planned for the 40th anniversary, or perhaps nothing at all. If rumors about a Nintendo Direct this month prove true, that would be the next place to look for any Mario-related news.

Other Free Switch 2 Updates, Including Pokémon Scarlet/Violet

This article focuses on the recent update for Super Mario 3D All-Stars. However, it`s worth noting that other original Switch games have also received free updates to enhance their performance on the Nintendo Switch 2, including popular titles like Pokémon Scarlet/Violet.
