With Hollow Knight: Silksong`s highly anticipated release set for September 4th—six years after its announcement and numerous delays—a resurfaced Reddit post from a decade ago offers a remarkable look back at the original Hollow Knight`s humble beginnings and Team Cherry`s incredible journey.
Posted by Reddit user “crazy_loop” ten years ago, the thread featured an early trailer for Hollow Knight (which would eventually release in 2017) alongside a deeply personal message.
“Last year my best friend quit his full-time job to chase his dream and make a fully fledged video game,” the post read. “Today he just released a trailer and it looks beyond amazing.”
While a new Silksong trailer today would ignite widespread excitement, the reaction to the original Hollow Knight trailer in 2015 was notably subdued, with many players appearing indifferent.
The top-voted comment predicted it would be “a fine game, but the market is currently saturated with side-scrolling platformers so I feel his game may not do as good as he hopes.” Other users echoed skepticism, suggesting the game lacked “innovation and individuality of something like Limbo,” and concluded it was “probably not going to be huge” or even “cliche.”
What a stark contrast a decade brings. Although some in the thread recognized Hollow Knight`s potential and expressed interest, the overall sentiment leaned towards it being a “fine” game that would struggle to find a significant audience, perhaps only gaining a small boost from Reddit`s front page.
Fast forward to today, Hollow Knight has sold over 15 million copies, is achieving new concurrent player records on Steam, and its sequel is so highly anticipated that other major titles are actively delaying their launches to avoid competing with Silksong. This success is a monumental achievement for a game once dismissed as just “another drop in the metroidvania bucket.”
Despite its predecessor`s massive success and the fervent fan anticipation, Hollow Knight: Silksong will be priced at a modest $20, just $5 more than the original. It will be available on PC, PlayStation 4, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch, and Switch 2 (offering a free upgrade for Switch 2 users), and will also launch day one on Game Pass.
