8BitDo N64 Bluetooth Controller: A Modern Take for Switch & PC

8BitDo`s updated wireless controller, a reimagining of the classic Nintendo 64 gamepad, is set to launch next Wednesday, July 30. The manufacturer confirmed this release date. The 8BitDo 64 Bluetooth Controller was initially unveiled alongside the Analogue 3D console last October. As the Analogue 3D, a 4K Nintendo 64 console, experienced two delays, the new gamepad, designed in collaboration with the retro hardware manufacturer, also saw its release postponed twice.

Although primarily designed to complement the Analogue 3D, the controller also supports PC, Nintendo Switch, and Android devices. For Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscribers, this new gamepad offers an exciting new way to experience classic N64 titles. The 8BitDo 64 Bluetooth Controller is available for pre-order, priced at $40, in both white and black color options.

We have inquired with 8BitDo regarding the controller`s compatibility with the upcoming Switch 2. It`s worth noting that several of the manufacturer`s existing controllers received firmware updates when the Switch 2 launched in June. Considering that 8BitDo`s latest Switch controllers—including the Ultimate 2 Bluetooth, All-Button Arcade, and the forthcoming Pro 3 Bluetooth—already support the Switch 2, it would be surprising if the 64 Controller did not also function with Nintendo`s new console.

Detailed Features of the 8BitDo 64 Bluetooth Controller

The 8BitDo 64 Controller is a wireless Bluetooth gamepad that incorporates all the buttons expected for N64 gaming, but reorganized into a contemporary form factor that resembles 8BitDo`s popular Ultimate Controller series.

Its redesigned shape moves the joystick to the left side of the controller. This Hall Effect joystick features a metal ring, ensuring it provides the same smooth and precise control found in other 8BitDo controllers utilizing this technology. Hall Effect sensors are crucial for eliminating the risk of stick drift, while the metal rings enhance long-term durability.

8BitDo has successfully recreated the unique feel of the N64 control stick`s surface by adding three circular ridges. A significant improvement is the rubberized stick cap, replacing the original`s hard plastic surface. The controller also includes an octagonal stick gate, a design element Nintendo implemented on the N64 controller to simulate an eight-way D-pad. The new controller`s actual D-pad is also repositioned but remains in a recessed pocket.

The prominent A/B buttons and the four C buttons maintain the original N64 layout and dimensions. However, the shoulder buttons and triggers have been redesigned to align with modern gaming expectations. The shoulder buttons are labeled R and L, just like on the N64 controller, while both top triggers function as Z buttons—a departure from the N64`s single Z button located on the central grip. These dual triggers will prove useful for playing games beyond the N64 library.

The large Start button makes a return, accompanied by three additional buttons commonly found on many 8BitDo Switch controllers: Minus (Select), 8BitDo (Home), and Turbo. Once the turbo function is assigned to a button, holding it down will register as repeated taps.

Users have the flexibility to fully remap controls and make other adjustments using the 8BitDo Ultimate Software, available as a desktop or mobile application. The controller supports two distinct input modes: S-Input (Switch) and D-Input. Although it features built-in rumble motors, vibration functionality is currently limited to the Analogue 3D and Nintendo Switch platforms.

The black edition of the 8BitDo 64 is also scheduled to launch on the same day. However, Amazon currently indicates a potentially longer shipping time for the black controller. While delivery dates may vary based on your location (e.g., an estimated August 11 arrival was shown as of July 25), it`s possible your order could arrive sooner, as Amazon`s estimates are often quite conservative.

The 8BitDo 64 controller isn`t the only exciting upcoming release from the company. On August 12, 8BitDo will also launch the Pro 3 Bluetooth Gamepad, priced at $70. This highly customizable, retro-inspired wireless controller boasts broad compatibility, supporting Nintendo Switch 2, Switch, PC, Apple devices, and Android.

What is the Analogue 3D?

The Analogue 3D is the next FPGA console from the premium retro hardware manufacturer. Unfortunately, pre-orders for the $250 console quickly sold out last October. Interested retro gamers should keep an eye out for potential restocks after the console officially launches in late August.

This console allows users to play their original N64 game cartridges with precise, hardware-accurate emulation and 100% compatibility, all upscaled to 4K resolution. The console features four controller ports, accommodating original Nintendo 64 three-pronged controllers or various third-party wired gamepads. Importantly, the Analogue 3D does not include a controller, so purchasers will need to acquire an 8BitDo 64 Bluetooth Controller or other compatible controllers separately.

Used N64 controllers are available for purchase, or numerous affordable replicas of the original controller can be found online.
