The reasons for Valkyrie Profile`s understated debut in North America are quite clear. Japanese publisher Enix had only recently re-established its U.S. presence, likely buoyed by the burgeoning popularity of JRPGs post-Final Fantasy 7 and the global success of Sony`s licensed release of Star Ocean: The Second Story. However, gaining traction for a new PlayStation 1 RPG was an uphill battle. The Sega Dreamcast was already available, the PlayStation 2`s U.S. launch was mere weeks away, and Squaresoft had just released Chrono Cross, the highly anticipated successor to the beloved Chrono Trigger.
During my freshman year of college, just before my birthday, I was seeking a new RPG to fill the gaps between classes. My choice was narrowed down to two titles: Valkyrie Profile or Chrono Cross. Having thoroughly enjoyed Star Ocean 2 the previous summer, my intuition strongly guided me towards Valkyrie Profile.
That decision is one I`ve never regretted. Valkyrie Profile stands as one of the most exceptional RPGs of its era, a game that, despite widespread adoration from its dedicated fanbase, remains tragically underplayed. A quarter-century has passed, and its unique charm remains unmatched in the gaming landscape.
As its title suggests, Valkyrie Profile`s world is deeply rooted in Norse mythology, albeit with considerable creative liberty. Lenneth, the titular Valkyrie, is called to serve Odin, the supreme deity of Asgard. With the ominous prophecy of Ragnarok looming and the Aesir gods` conflict with the Vanir intensifying, Odin seeks to bolster his ranks with worthy human souls, known as einherjar. Lenneth`s mission is to journey to Midgard, the human realm, to find recently deceased, deserving souls, train them, and transport them to Asgard in preparation for the gods` ultimate confrontation. Yet, Midgard itself presents numerous challenges, from undead threats emerging from Niflheim to rebellious former einherjar and humans overstepping their bounds.
From the outset, it`s starkly evident that Midgard is a realm of profound sorrow and despair, a sharp contrast to the divine splendor of Asgard. Villages teeter on the edge of collapse, and desperation drives many to engage in perilous activities for survival. Illicit trades like smuggling, theft, and human trafficking flourish in this harsh, unforgiving world. Life for many seems precarious, almost as if they already have one foot in the grave. One can`t help but ponder if Ragnarok`s impending cataclysm might offer a bittersweet release from such pervasive suffering.
Gifted with spiritual insight, Lenneth perceives the struggles and anguish of the departed. When she arrives to claim a soul, she witnesses their final moments and the tragic circumstances of their demise. Her initial recruits include a proud princess and a grizzled mercenary, both ensnared in a treacherous noble`s intricate scheme, leading to their shared doom. Many more tragedies unfold: a warrior sacrifices himself in a Faustian bargain to restore his sister`s sight, only to succumb to internal demons. A magic academy headmistress is brutally murdered by her own husband, transformed into a monster by a vengeful student. These are but a few examples. Not every death appears unjust, as not all of Lenneth`s recruits are inherently virtuous individuals. Their utility to Odin is paramount, and Lenneth`s role is to hone them into formidable warriors.
Through the interconnected narratives of the deceased, insights into Midgard`s geopolitical landscape are gradually revealed. While the gods typically show little concern for human affairs, Lenneth encounters several characters who significantly alter the course of her mission. There`s an einherjar who possesses an unsettling familiarity with Lenneth, and Brahms, the undead lord, who seemingly holds someone vital to Lenneth and the gods captive to deter his destruction. Then there`s the prodigious sorcerer Lezard Valeth, whose unsettling obsession with making the Valkyrie “his” is surpassed only by the immoral lengths he`s willing to go to achieve it.
The pervasive tragedy woven throughout Valkyrie Profile distinguishes it from many contemporary RPGs, but its enduring appeal also stems from its unique, interconnected gameplay systems. One such innovation is the game`s distinct structure. Exploration is largely unconstrained, allowing players to visit various regions, recruit einherjar, and explore dungeons at their discretion. Progression, however, is governed by a `period` system: each chapter consists of a set number of periods, and actions like recruitment, exploration, or resting consume a specific amount of time. Upon exhausting a chapter`s periods, Lenneth receives an evaluation from Asgard. Success in tasks, such as dispatching suitable einherjar and valuable artifacts to Asgard, influences her evaluation and subsequent rewards. While certain characters and areas become accessible in specific chapters, players generally have considerable freedom and aren`t compelled to complete everything immediately.
Another defining feature of the gameplay lies in its dungeons, which are presented as 2D side-scrolling platformer sequences. These areas are filled with traps, enemies, challenging jumps, and unique puzzles. Dungeons frequently incorporate custom obstacles and ingenious tricks that Lenneth must overcome, blending puzzle-solving with platforming action. Fortunately, Lenneth possesses a versatile crystal projectile. This tool offers multiple uses: temporarily freezing foes, conjuring barriers and platforms, and even redirecting light or manipulating distant objects. She can also execute advanced traversal techniques by strategically creating and shattering crystals, allowing her to reach hidden areas and enabling various speedrunning strategies.
However, Valkyrie Profile`s most memorable and distinct element is its combat. Tri-Ace`s earlier Star Ocean titles integrated action elements into traditional RPG mechanics, and Valkyrie Profile builds on this concept with an entirely different approach. Each combat turn puts you in control of four characters, each assigned to a specific face button. Depending on their equipped weapons, characters execute designated attacks when their button is pressed. Some attacks have special attributes, like breaking an enemy`s guard or launching them into the air for juggle combos. Landing enough hits in a turn fills a gauge, enabling the release of a party member`s ultimate attack. With strategic planning and practice, players can string together impressive combos and supers akin to those found in fighting games.
Yet, enemies won`t always make combat straightforward; they will guard, parry, and sidestep when possible, disrupting your flow and making them significantly harder to defeat. Understanding the properties of your attacks – their hitboxes, number of hits, and ability to juggle or damage grounded enemies – is crucial for both overcoming powerful adversaries and maximizing post-combat rewards. Likewise, learning how enemies react to your offensive moves and conduct their own attacks is vital, as you can also dodge, counter, and guard, provided you have the appropriate skills. As impressive as this sounds, I`m merely touching the surface of the combat`s complexity; it offers a profound level of skill and nuance that will challenge both seasoned RPG players and action-game veterans.
The depth of Valkyrie Profile`s gameplay is further enhanced by an intricate skill system. Beyond aiding characters in battle, learning skills also boosts their Hero Value and bestows positive traits, making them more suitable for service in Valhalla. Passive character skills provide statistical enhancements, neutralize negative character attributes, and often fulfill specific requests from the gods. Combat skills encompass auto-healing, low-HP survival tactics, counterattacks, added effects to standard strikes (such as splash damage and extra hits), and potent techniques to catch enemies off guard.
The narrative reaches its climax in the game`s final chapter, where Lenneth leads the einherjar in a direct assault on the Vanir stronghold. After achieving victory, one might anticipate a glorious celebration in Valhalla. However, the initial outcome is far from that. The ending received for this seemingly triumphant performance is strikingly underwhelming and brief, almost eerily so, suggesting that something vital is being concealed. And indeed, it is! Valkyrie Profile is renowned for its multiple endings, and a significant reason for its lasting impact on players is the ingenious twist it employs.
The path to unlocking the game`s true, most satisfying ending diverges radically from typical player expectations. It`s natural to assume that excelling at the tasks presented by the game would lead to greater rewards and, consequently, a superior ending. Yet, Valkyrie Profile subverts this convention. Instead, it subtly encourages players to question and even defy their assigned mission.
Throughout the game, there are subtle clues suggesting that Odin and the gods are not entirely benevolent, viewing humanity merely as expendable tools for their divine conflicts. By meticulously adhering to Odin`s commands, Lenneth inadvertently functions as his obedient pawn. But what if Lenneth were to disobey? Overt rebellion under the watchful eye of a powerful deity would undoubtedly place her in immediate peril.
To liberate Lenneth from Odin`s dominion, the player must execute a series of minor acts of defiance over time: dispatching only the minimum required number of einherjar, choosing to retain some sacred treasures of the gods discovered in dungeons, and exploring locations linked to a forgotten past. Even the simple act of removing the ring Odin bestowed upon Lenneth during consultations with Asgard between chapters contributes to weakening his influence. By sufficiently lowering her `Seal Value,` a dramatic chain of events is triggered upon entering a specific area in Chapter 7, leading to a profound moment of reckoning for Lenneth, with the destiny of all realms hanging precariously in the balance.
The unconventional prerequisites for accessing this true ending were a profound shock to players upon the game`s original release and remain distinctive even today. We are generally conditioned in games to follow instructions for praise and rewards, seldom pausing to question the underlying motives. Valkyrie Profile, in stark contrast, reveals the complete truth about its world only to those who intentionally and defiantly challenge its fundamental systems.
Valkyrie Profile has inspired sequels, spin-offs, and spiritual successors, influencing many subsequent games. While some of these follow-ups have been excellent in their own right, others have been less impactful. Crucially, all subsequent titles have departed in some way from the original gameplay mechanics that made Valkyrie Profile such an exceptional experience. Perhaps it was a unique convergence of factors, a “lighting in a bottle” moment, as the gaming world and development practices have evolved so much since its initial launch that replicating that magic is impossible. This makes its current limited availability on modern platforms particularly lamentable: only a compromised mobile port and a PlayStation 4/5 re-release of the PSP version exist. I can only hope this situation changes eventually, as there truly is nothing else quite like Valkyrie Profile, and perhaps there never will be. When I first played it decades ago on the PlayStation 1, I was utterly captivated. A quarter-century later, that enchantment remains.
