Kickstarter Hardwood Playing Cards Bibelot Games Project Is LIVE! Support It Now!

Hardwood Playing Cards Bibelot Games

Absolutely beautiful!

Hardwood Playing Cards by Bibelot Games via Kickstarter is their newest project! These veterans of the boardgame circuit, who previously funded the amazing Reliquary Collection and Midnight Collection (now purchaseable on Amazon!), have created one of the coolest items I’ve ever seen!

Real-life playing cards created out of ACTUAL wood! This is not the fake stuff, this is the REAL deal. Real wood. Not only that, but the Cards actually shuffle! You can bend them and use them to play any Card game that exists! Like their previous projects, these cards are made of the highest quality materials, infused with mineral oils to keep them soft and smelling amazing, and laser-etched on real-world material so that no two cards are exactly the same!

While these cards are amazing and great for display and “flash”, they are still real playing cards and are suitable for friendly card games, shuffling, house building, card tossing, and many other activities. They are also surprisingly durable!

Hardwood Playing Cards Close-Up Spread Bibelot Games Kickstarter

Gorgeous!

To quote myself in an email to the company:
“The one thing I might add, although I don’t know if this is going into it or not, as I didn’t see it mentioned, but if these are scented like the deck you sent me with that oil, then you MUST mention and emphasize it! That smell…. Oh man. It’s like heaven. It’s like opening a new book or a new videogame for the first time. The smell simply must be experienced and cannot be properly conveyed through video or pictures! So please talk about it! Even without the smell, I think you should emphasize texture a bit more as well. Talk about how amazing these cards FEEL in the hands. It truly is unique. Everyone I showed the cards too was enthralled and wanting to touch and smell and bend them. It just has such a cool texture that’s so unique and feels like nothing else.”

Let me tell you, I was sent a prototype copy of these Hardwood Playing Cards (before they even had themes!) and I and everyone I showed them too was completely enthralled! They are so impressive, and when you get them in your hands you can’t help but be amazed. Have YOU ever played with cards made of real wood? The answer is NO! lol.

To that end, you owe it to yourself to check out this amazing project and please BACK IT!

Hardwood Playing Cards Durable And Bendable Bibelot Games Kickstarter

Durable, bendable and playable!

“At Bibelot Games, we love taking games to “the next level”. Better formats, better materials, better entertainment. With this project, we’re doing the same for playing cards! We’re discarding the plastic and paper, and making beautiful and luxurious playing card decks from real hardwoods. They’re thin enough to shuffle, thick enough to cherish, and unique enough to know it’s real wood!”

These cards are created using super thin veneers, composed of three layers, including laser etched Okoume hardwood fronts, themed hardwood for the back, and an acrylic core binding them together. Each card measures 2.5″ wide x 3.5″ tall x 0.04″ thick and shows off the natural beauty of real hardwood, imperfections and all. These are not a “printed woodgrain pattern”! Because it’s actual, real, natural wood, the blank backs of the cards are free to show off the unique patterns, markings and coloration of each card; giving you true depth and tactical bliss with each piece.

The are SIX themed decks, each with completely unique artwork! In addition, each deck sold through Kickstarter will be a limited edition, individually numbered on the speciality Ace Card, based on Backer Number. Meaning the first people to support the project will get the earliest, lower numbers!

All decks except the Tarot come with a real leather “tuck box” to keep your cards fresh and stored. The cases are also laser-etched with visually appealing grommets, magnetic snaps and a belt loop for easy portability! Each Collector’s Set meanwhile comes in a laser-etched wooden box to store your cards and display them to impressed on-lookers! :D

You can completely customize and build the deck you want, and there are four different deck sizes of playing cards to choose from (“By doing our own manufacturing, one deck at a time, we can build any combination of theme and deck size so you can get the cards that are perfect for you!”). You can either choose a: 25 Card Deck, 34 Card Deck, 50 Card Deck, 54 Card Deck or 78 Card Deck!

GCW Zero Portable Open-Source Linux Based Handheld System In Development. Seeking Kickstarter Funding

GCW Zero Portable Game System Hardware

GCW-Zero, An all-new open-source Linux-based handheld system.

The GCW-Zero is an all-new open-source, Linux-based handheld gaming console, a portable system “made by gamers, for gamers”, that is completely customizable to your liking and can emulate virtually all retro consoles. The device is seeking Kickstarter funding of $130,000 to help get the system off the manufacturing rack. The console will focus on retro experiences, but allow gamers to customize and create games for it (as well as official ports and apps) that are supported and encouraged by GCW (Game Consoles Worldwide), the hardware manufacturer, themselves. They hope this will spawn a growing community of gamers and developers around the device.

$135 dollars will get you the system on Kickstarter for now. I’ll update when I hear about an official price for the actual production model if/when it hits stores.

More below from the Kickstarter Page. Check it out and consider Backing the device if you think it’s an interesting concept.

Handheld Gaming Is Awesome
We live in a technological era where it is possible to place powerful gaming hardware that exceeds yesterday’s PCs in the palm of your hand. Tablets and smart phones are just one example of this. Their touch screens have already revolutionized casual, portable gaming. However, many gamers would agree that they are in their true natural habitat when in direct control of that experience with physical buttons and a real d-pad or authentic analog control. The world just needed these two ideas combined into one package for the gaming community.

We are developing the GCW Zero, a handheld console built around the Ingenic JZ4770 1 GHz MIPS processor. It is powerful enough to run classic PC games, emulate the game consoles we grew up with and run homebrew games seamlessly at high frame rates.

Open Source Software Is Awesome
We here at Game Consoles Worldwide believe that a company should not just capitalize and consumers should be allowed to do more than consume. Too many devices today are walled gardens, designed solely for consumption. Not ours! The GCW Zero gives you full control of your handheld. Install any application you want to run, change the operating system in any way you want. We won’t fight you; in fact we’ll encourage you.

Because the Zero runs Linux, a huge library of excellent, free, open source software can run on it. Our core development team is hard at work porting popular applications to provide a strong launch day lineup and we’re sure many more will follow from us and from our community.

Videogame Kickstarter Projects Most Successful Of All Project Types. Earning Over $83 Million In 2012

Best of Kickstarter 2012 Games Most Funded

Videogames owned the Kickstarter space in 2012!

$83 million worth of Videogame Kickstarter Projects were earned in 2012, announced the Kickstarter Crowd-funding platform. This earns videogames the unique title of being the highest-funded project type on the crowd-funding website.

An absolutely astounding “2,796″ videogame projects were asking for the money of fans in 2012 alone on Kickstarter. Of all those many, many (TOO MANY, really…) games asking for your money, exactly 911 (that’s nine-hundred-and-eleven) Videogame Kickstarter Projects were succesffully funded, by over 561,574 Backers!

2012 was truly the “Year of the Indie Game” on Kickstarter, absolutely pulverizing other Kickstarter categories, and proving that videogames are not only mainstream, they are among the most popular of ALL mediums, whether you’re talking about arts and crafts, books, food, travel, films, music, museums, parks or whatever, videogames are beloved the world over.

Overall, some 2.2 million contributors pledged $320 million on over 18,000 different projects in 2012 on Kickstarter. A whopping SEVENTEEN projects earned over $1 million dollars. Yikes.

So what Kickstarter Project gained the most money in the videogame realm? It was Tim Schafer and Double Fine’s upcoming adventure game, which generated $3.3 million dollars (pinky to mouth) in Kickstarter donations… the goal for the project was a measly $400,000! (which has become common legend, by now). And there were tons more success stories where that came from.

Kickstarter launched in 2009, and has grown beyond what anyone could have anticipated, successfully funding all manner of Indie projects from both teams, companies and individuals and forever changing the course of the videogame industry. Because of Kickstarter and what it has bred (similar “crowd-funding” websites and services), it is now easier than ever to create a videogame and find funding for it; beyond traditional means. And that’s worth celebrating.

Check out Kickstarter’s The Best of 2012 for some more truly mindblowing stats.

The project ends on October 15th 2012, with 15 Days to go and $2000 left for the project to get funded.

Like The Reliquary Collection before it, The Midnight Collection is a set of 8 boardgames, created with the highest-quality materials in a very unique format.

The Midnight Collection Boxset With Pouch Boardgames kickstarter

Isn’t this boxset just beautiful?!

Each game in The Midnight Collection comes in a suede leather pouch with the game pieces to play the game inside the pouch, which is securely wrapped via an attached satin drawstring cord that wraps around the pouch to close the included pieces securely inside and allow for easy portability.

The pouch doubles as the gameboard, with the board LASER-ETCHED onto the material, providing you with a board that should stay usable and vibrant for a long time to come. When you want to play, just pull the string and lay out the board, the pieces will be right there for you to dive in. Last but definitely not least, the game pieces are made of solid marble or high-quality wood, and the rules are created using extremely durable composite paper, and are laced onto the satin drawstring so you always have the rules available and can never lose them!

For the Midnight collection, each of the game’s is horror-themed, just in time for Halloween! Each of the 8 “Monsters & Mayhem” games is easy to learn, fun to play, and include games of strategy and chance, each with varying rules, themes, gameboards and included pieces!

Additional Achievements will be revealed as the The Midnight Collection Kickstar closes in on the final days.

Either way you shake it, this is a beautiful and unique piece of gaming art!

Additionally, Bibelot Games is a small, independent, American-made company based out of my home state of Arizona in Cave Creek (I live in Phoenix). They are offering game lovers the highest-quality boardgames, that are sure to be enjoyed by your kids and grandkids for generations, and make a great collectible or display piece, even if you aren’t big on board games.

Thus, I urge you to back the project and support Bibelot Games with their Midnight Collection Set! Labors of love like this need our support to thrive!

Look forward to additional videos showing off a few of the games as well as reviews of two of the Midnight Collection Set games (The Stake Out and Where-Wolf) and one game from The Reliquary Collection (The Royal Game of Ur), in the near future!

Eventually I will review the entire Midnight Collection and Reliquary Collection sets early next year! I CAN’T WAIT!

Ouya Breaks Kickstarter Records Earning $5 Million For Android-Based Hacking Console. With 21 Days To Go, How High Will It Go?

Ouya Games (Unconfirmed)

This is what they imagine the Ouya videogame selection process to look like in the main menu.

Ouya has shattered Kickstarter records by reaching over $5 million dollars, the most for any Kickstarter Project in any category EVER.

Beating out previous highs, both of which were videogames. These include Double Fine Adventure which raised $3 million ($3,336,371 to be exact) and Wasteland 2 from inXile which raised nearly $3 million (or $2,933,252).

This is a huge deal because of all the complications that come from building and producing a videogame console, as well as the cool fact that videogame-related Kickstarter Projects have proven out to be the most popular and the ones that draw the biggest numbers of Backers! No small feat on a site with thousands of projects and new ones, big and small, going up every day!

Ouya

The Ouya Android videogame system.

In addition to becoming the biggest Kickstarter Project of ALL TIME, Ouya also shattered and set two other records:

* Fastest-ever Kickstarter Project to reach $1 Million Dollars, achieving that benchmark in a slim and extraordinary eight hours and 22 minutes!
* Most money ever raised over the period of a single day (24 hours), with $3.2 million raised! Shattering the previous record of $1.9 million dollars.

Sadly though, all this incredible amount of money so quickly may have the developers behind Ouya reeling. Certainly none of them could’ve ever dreamed they’d raise so much cash, with their goal being set at $90,000!

Doubts about the console and the makers ability to create it have surfaced after founder Julie Uhrman recently contradicted herself in two separate interviews. First saying that they would seek to find funding outside of Ouya Kickstarter, but then saying that they would not be seeking additional funding outside of Kickstarter.

The exact quotes, respectively,

1. “This is a really big undertaking and it’s going to be expensive. We’re looking for additional funds of money but more importantly we wanted to take it to Kickstarter regardless.” – Ouya founder Julie Uhrman to MCV’s sister site Develop.

2. “Let me be clear, Ouya is not seeking additional funding outside of Kickstarter. Our intent in going to Kickstarter was to raise money that would take us from functional prototype to product on the market.” Julie Uhrman to Eurogamer.

So which is it? These and other inconsistencies have sowed seeds of doubt and worry in some people. Although to me, I think maybe they changed their tune from the above two statements once they realized exactly how much money was coming in from the Kickstarter. Maybe they were planning to get outside funding, but the Kickstarter money train keeps barreling ahead with no end in site!

Either way, I still think Ouya is a breath of fresh air, and I hope it’s a raging success!

Here is the announcement video for Ouya from the Kickstarter Project’s main page, be sure to go there and read the Updates the developers have posted, including the fact that Ouya has secured their first exclusive game. Robert Bowling (of Call of Duty fame) and his upcoming “Human Element” title will get an exclusive Ouya prequel!

Earthworm Jim 4? David Perry, Creator, Wants To Make It. But Needs To Bring Original Team Together of Tommy Tallarico and Doug TenNapel

Earthworm Jim Wallpaper

… Earthworm Jim wallpaper. Awesome concept, awesome characters… Let’s hope Earthworm Jim 4 gets made!

Earthworm Jim 4 could become a reality. The creator of the hit platformer series from the 90s, David Perry, really wants to develop the game.

However, he wants to do it right, and that means bringing together the original development team that made Earthworm Jim possible. THAT, is easier said than done.

David Perry himself seems like he is free to do it (do I smell Kickstarter?), he is the ex-founder of Shiny Entertainment, and more recently had success with the Gaikai Cloud Streaming videogame service, which Sony just bought.

Earthworm Jim’s soundtrack was done by Tommy Tallarico who is knee-deep with his highly successful Video Games Live symphony orchestra concert series, whereas Earthworm Jim scriptwriter and artist Doug TenNapel is extremely busy with multiple projects across Comics, Short Films and Cartoons.

Even so, David Perry says, regarding Earthworm Jim 4:
“I’m sure it’s going to happen, I just can’t tell you exactly when.” He has even started a Earthworm Jim 4 Facebook Group.

I say they should start a Earthworm Jim 4 Kickstarter project to raise funding for the project, and then David Perry should do as much of it himself as he can, with a small development team. They can then bring Tommy and Doug on later to make changes or add aspects to it to flesh it out and give it the personal touch of the original team.

The gaming world is long overdue for a High-Definition, modern Earthworm Jim remake or revival, so let’s hope this happens!

Sad fact… I never played the Earthworm Jim games. Much like Ren & Stimpy, I found that I hated the humor I saw, and for some reason was opposed to it before I even gave it a chance. I’ll have to rectify that someday…. In my wise old age. :P

Here is a Earthworm Jim 1 gameplay video.

KickStarter Project You Should Support: The Reliquary Collection, Ancient Boardgames Re-Imagined

The Reliquary Collection Photo

A pic of the full 12-Game Reliquary Collection boxset! Would you pay $500 for this? I WOULD!

The Reliquary Collection Kickstarter Project… Imagine ancient boardgames from 5000 B.C. to 700 A.D. modernized and streamlined for play by a new generation in 2012! That is what you get with this awesome Kickstarter Project called “The Reliquary Collection”. The ancient boardgames are taken from all over the world, from ancient Sumer to ancient Egypt, China, Korea and more. Thus, this project is as much an awesome gaming history lesson than anything else.

The Reliquary Collection reproduces these ancient boardgames using the highest quality materials and presenting them in a super unique format… that of suede leather pouches laser-etched with the gameboard, and pieces made of the highest materials like natural marble playing pieces or two-sided dice made of solid wood called “lots”. Other features include extremely durable composite paper rulebooks laced onto the satin draw-string and a drawstring that allows the game pieces to be folded into the string-closed pouch for easy carrying, protection and portability.

Here is an overview of the Reliquary Collection and what it contains.

12 ancient boardgames are included in the Reliquary Collection with the game’s available both individually or in sets of 6 Games or 12 Games. You can even get Collector’s Editions which include all of the game’s and the pieces needed to play them in this unique format, all wrapped in a beautifully packaged, numbered and dated, custom engraved wooden box with a leather top, perfect for storing and displaying an entire 6 or 12 Game Set.
