Ouya Breaks Kickstarter Records Earning $5 Million For Android-Based Hacking Console. With 21 Days To Go, How High Will It Go?

Ouya Games (Unconfirmed)

This is what they imagine the Ouya videogame selection process to look like in the main menu.

Ouya has shattered Kickstarter records by reaching over $5 million dollars, the most for any Kickstarter Project in any category EVER.

Beating out previous highs, both of which were videogames. These include Double Fine Adventure which raised $3 million ($3,336,371 to be exact) and Wasteland 2 from inXile which raised nearly $3 million (or $2,933,252).

This is a huge deal because of all the complications that come from building and producing a videogame console, as well as the cool fact that videogame-related Kickstarter Projects have proven out to be the most popular and the ones that draw the biggest numbers of Backers! No small feat on a site with thousands of projects and new ones, big and small, going up every day!

Ouya

The Ouya Android videogame system.

In addition to becoming the biggest Kickstarter Project of ALL TIME, Ouya also shattered and set two other records:

* Fastest-ever Kickstarter Project to reach $1 Million Dollars, achieving that benchmark in a slim and extraordinary eight hours and 22 minutes!
* Most money ever raised over the period of a single day (24 hours), with $3.2 million raised! Shattering the previous record of $1.9 million dollars.

Sadly though, all this incredible amount of money so quickly may have the developers behind Ouya reeling. Certainly none of them could’ve ever dreamed they’d raise so much cash, with their goal being set at $90,000!

Doubts about the console and the makers ability to create it have surfaced after founder Julie Uhrman recently contradicted herself in two separate interviews. First saying that they would seek to find funding outside of Ouya Kickstarter, but then saying that they would not be seeking additional funding outside of Kickstarter.

The exact quotes, respectively,

1. “This is a really big undertaking and it’s going to be expensive. We’re looking for additional funds of money but more importantly we wanted to take it to Kickstarter regardless.” – Ouya founder Julie Uhrman to MCV’s sister site Develop.

2. “Let me be clear, Ouya is not seeking additional funding outside of Kickstarter. Our intent in going to Kickstarter was to raise money that would take us from functional prototype to product on the market.” Julie Uhrman to Eurogamer.

So which is it? These and other inconsistencies have sowed seeds of doubt and worry in some people. Although to me, I think maybe they changed their tune from the above two statements once they realized exactly how much money was coming in from the Kickstarter. Maybe they were planning to get outside funding, but the Kickstarter money train keeps barreling ahead with no end in site!

Either way, I still think Ouya is a breath of fresh air, and I hope it’s a raging success!

Here is the announcement video for Ouya from the Kickstarter Project’s main page, be sure to go there and read the Updates the developers have posted, including the fact that Ouya has secured their first exclusive game. Robert Bowling (of Call of Duty fame) and his upcoming “Human Element” title will get an exclusive Ouya prequel!

OUYA Game System Is First Android Console. Releases 2013. Indie, Open-Source and Hacker Friendly. Will It Change the Game?

OUYA Videogame System and Controller. Uses Android.

…. Meet the next American videogame console. OUYA. Android-based, open-source, hacker-friendly, Indie-focused.

OUYA is a new Android Videogame Console. Kickstarter funded, it seeks to change the game significantly in 2013 by offering a cheap, digital App-based alternative to the standard console model and fully embraces the ability for users to customize the system, hack it, open it up, create their own games and freely play all videogames released for it.

Pronounced “Oooooo ya!”, the funkily-named new system has already raised over $1.5 million dollars on OUYA Kickstarter, with 29 more days still left for the project to keep raking in the cash in order to officially turn out their dream project.

OUYA is a console made for gamers and Indie developers, a system that doubles as a Development Kit, allowing anyone who buys one to learn to create their own games for it (using the Android platform), that they can then easily translate to the OUYA system and sell for whatever price they desire! No need to purchase a license or an expensive SDK. No jumping through hoops. The possibilities this opens up are truly endless and should ensure that the system has a steady stream of new and old games coming to it at all times.

OUYA System Specs:

* Tegra3 quad-core processor
* 1GB RAM
* 8GB of internal flash storage
* HDMI connection to the TV, with support for up to 1080p HD
* WiFi 802.11 b/g/n
* Bluetooth LE 4.0
* USB 2.0 (one)
* Wireless controller with standard controls (two analog sticks, d-pad, eight action buttons, a system button), a touchpad
* Android 4.0

The system is held together by normal screws, and they encourage you to bust the system open and mod it to your hearts content! HOW ABOUT THAT! Whether you want to create new hardware for it, hack it to put whatever apps, software programs, games, etc. you want on it, the choice is yours and whatever choices you make will NOT void your warranty. Truly, this is a whole new world.

Indie developers are excited about the prospects of OUYA, and the developers behind the console are dedicated to making it the most Indie friendly environment in existence for publishing games that can be played on the TV. OUYA comes with its own state-of-the-art in-house developed videogame controller, and the publisher is actively seeking out developers to embrace the platform. I should mention that it is being created by a female, named Julie Uhrman; which is definitely breaking the glass ceiling as far as videogame consoles are concerned.

OUYA will run on Android 4.0, features it’s own unique controller with 7 buttons and a built-in touchpad, cost around $100, is open-source, hacker-friendly, all games are free-to-play in some form (whether that’s a demo or the ability to play the entire game for free and pay when you want or through microtransactions), developers will set their own prices, it features no overlording big-brother manufacturer, supports twitch.tv out-the-box, and offers the ability out-the-box for anyone to jump into the developer platform side and create their own videogames. They can then sell them in the open Android-based marketplace on the OUYA console.

Will this make OUYA an Indie-game haven? Will it significantly change the game? Will it be able to seriously compete with Xbox 720, PlayStation 4, Wii U, OnLive, PC’s, Tablets and the like?

That remains to be seen, but OUYA definitely sounds promising. Either way, competition is good, and hopefully this will inspire new avenues for game creation and game sales in the future, with an even broader focus on Indie developers. Which is always a good thing! I encourage you to go support the OUYA Kickstarter project if you are so able, let’s get more competition in the videogame console space!

My Virtual Boy Videogame Collection (VB). Do You Own A Nintendo Virtual Boy? (Poll Question)

Virtual Boy vs PlayStation 2 and Dreamcast (NES and Game Boy too)

The Nintendo Virtual Boy thinks he is hot stuff…. As more successful consoles look on and mock.

MY NINTENDO VIRTUAL BOY COLLECTION

1. Demo Cart
2. Golf
3. Mario Clash
4. Mario’s Tennis Virtual Boy
5. Nester’s Funky Bowling
6. Panic Bomber
7. Red Alarm
8. Teleroboxer
9. Tetris 3D
10. Wario Land Virtual Boy
11. Virtual Boy System Complete with Box, instructions and accessories
. Sadly the head piece quite working though a few years back. A common problem…

Nintendo Virtual Boy was a lil-known 1996 videogame console created by Nintendo’s mastermind… no not Shigeru Miyamoto, but his mentor, Metroid creator Gunpei Yokoi (who also created the Game & Watch handhelds, the Game Boy and Kid Icarus).

Virtual Boy was the first ever mainstream stereoscopic 3D videogame console/handheld, wherein the player looked through a pair of goggles (a headmounted display) at a dual-monochrome screen made up of exclusively scarlet-red graphics. Only two colors of in-game graphics were available, red and black. Resulting in games with no real color… This made them seem lacking compared to the bright, colorful graphics seen in console systems, and the ever-present deep red and pitch black mix, while giving the games some “pop”, also made them seem drab and lacking in personality… once the extremely unique look wore off, that is.

Lacking portability due to the fact that you had to place it on a solid surface and look into the viewfinder, the system had many issues that killed it quickly… making the Virtual Boy Nintendo’s biggest ever system failure (resulting in the immediate firing of Gunpei Yokoi).

Putting the nail in the coffin of the system were the supposed headaches caused by extended play of glaring red graphics in front of your face, the battery-obliteration of a system that required six-double A batteries for only a few hours of play (though an AC adapter was available), the low-amount of high-quality games (only 14 ever released in America, 22 worldwide) and, worst of all, the extremely high cost. The system launched at a cost of $180, cheap for a console but somewhat high for a portable. Too high for what the system offered… and it thus died a sudden death without selling even 100,000 systems.

You can read much more about the system in my History of Portable Videogames.

I am extremely proud of my Virtual Boy collection, all of the games I own are boxed and complete, with instructions, and I have 9 of the 14 North American games ever released; alongside a super rare demo cart. There were 22 Virtual Boy games released in Japan/Worldwide (mostly Japan), so I still have a ways to go in order to actually complete my system collection. But the Virtual Boy set (including the system boxed) is arguably the pride of my collection.

Sadly the head-mounted display no longer works, and I’ve yet to replace it (this is a common problem). Some day I plan on doing unboxing videos of each game, and reviewing all of them, as well as tracking down a COMPLETE Virtual Boy set.

Now enjoy this awesome Virtual Boy commercial!

Question of the Day Poll – What Next-Gen System Most Excites You? Wii U, PS4, or Xbox 720? (May 31, 2012)

Wii U vs Xbox 720 vs PS4 FIGHT!

FIGHT! What next-gen system most excites you? PS4, Xbox 720 or Wii U? VOTE NOW!

What upcoming next-generation videogame system, Wii U, PS4, or Xbox 720, are you most excited about?

I know its still extremely early-going to ask a question like this, given that we don’t yet know anything about the PlayStation 4 or the next-Xbox system, but we do know a lot about the Wii U. Either way, players have their own conditions they’d like settled for a next-gen system to be truly next-gen, and if one of the current systems hasn’t settled it for you, then you’ll likely be more excited about what the other manufacturers may have in-the-works.

In that way, this question will also tell us whether or not what Nintendo has shown of the Wii U, with its tablet controller, is enough to excite them more than the prospect of what Sony or Microsoft have up their sleeves.

Once the non-code-names are known for a particular system, I will update this poll question.

Wii U To Offer Full Game Downloads? We’ll Find Out At E3 2012

Wii U Downloadable Full Retail Titles Announced

The Wii U and 3DS are going full digital download-enabled very soon.

Full game downloads for Wii U and 3DS? Will Nintendo’s upcoming Wii U next-generation system (that will replace the original Wii) this year offer players the ability to simply download full copies of the latest retail releases digitally the day they hit stores?

That looks to be the case, Nintendo has announced. As any multiplatform gamer who owns more than just a Nintendo Wii well-knows, digitally downloading the latest retail releases is becoming more common these days, although having every full game available to download the same day it hits stores is still something of a rarity… and has not been fully integrated into the current-gen of systems completely; outside of the PlayStation Vita (Sony’s next-generation handheld that replaced the PSP, and competitor to the 3DS).

However the Xbox 360 and PS3 do offer a smaller, select number of full retail games that you can download and have offered them for quite some time now. With new digital titles hitting every week.

PC gamers meanwhile have been downloading virtually every game released digitally for years now; pushed in many ways by the online platform Steam (run by game developer Valve). Either way you slice it, full digital distribution is now considered normal (not just with games, also with the movie, book and music industries), and that participation from manufacturers and publishers of making everything (all titles released) available to download digitally on the day the game releases is definitely on the horizon. One would expect that the Xbox 720 and PS4 will surely offer every single game for full digital download.

Since the Wii U is coming out first, it looks like Nintendo (wisely) decided to jump the gun and offer digital downloads as well. In fact, Nintendo announced that it will first head into “full digital distribution” on the Nintendo 3DS with New Super Mario Bros. 2 (releasing this summer, in August) and will continue with an upcoming all-new Brain Age game for 3DS. One assumes other new games and the rest of their upcoming titles will also be available via digital distribution on the 3DS eShop. Of course, this will be more difficult (full digital downloads of retail releases) on the portable 3DS due to the fact that space to save the game files via SD cards is limited, and the files will be large if they are full retail titles.

Of course, all of this begs the obvious question… It is hard to go fully digital if your game system does NOT have a hard drive. Does this little fact mean that the Wii U will FINALLY have a hard drive? You’d think it would have to in this day and age, especially given that hard drives in consoles started with the original Xbox released all the way back in 2001, and continued on the Xbox 360 and PS3 in 2005 and 2006 (respectively).

So in addition to all upcoming first-party games being available in both digital and physical varieties day-and-date with their release, Nintendo also announced that gamers will be able to buy digital titles at brick-and-mortar retailers like GameStop; at which point they’ll receive a 16-digit download code that gives them access to the game (this essentially allows you to buy a digital game physically, as you can do right now with at videogame retailers for select downloadable titles from Xbox Live Arcade, PlayStation Network, WiiWare or Nintendo eShop. Although these games simply come on a card, and don’t come in a box or case or include a paper instruction manual). Other downsides of “going digital” include the fact that you can’t lend your game to friends, and the games will be restricted to only the system you downloaded it on. Nintendo also confirmed that downloading games digitally will not be much cheaper, if any cheaper, than buying games physically (although hopefully Nintendo will realize the savyness of offering games for super cheap in sales like Steam does… but I doubt it).

Either way, the digital revolution is coming soon. Get ready. We’ll find out much more solid details on the Wii U at E3 2012 from June 5-7th.

Here’s an awesome guy with a mega sinful videogame collection behind him (I am coveting) discussing the new Nintendo digital download strategy, one that not many Nintendo fans saw coming… given Nintendo’s outright defiance of fully embracing the Internet age to the degree that other platform manufacturers have… something that seems to be changing. Which is definitely a net-positive.

Weekly Videogame Releases Of the Week (Console and PC) May 14 2012 – May 20 2012

Diablo 3 Gameplay Screenshot

Gameplay of Diablo III in action! The long-awaited sequel launches on May 15, 2012 for PC!

What videogame releases of May 2012 release this week? The week of May 14th to May 20th sees some HUGE heavy hitters in the videogame arena.

The biggest release of this week, if not of the month, is most definitely Diablo 3. Diablo 3 is the long-awaited Blizzard-developed sequel to the hit hack-and-slash loot-dropping action RPG series that blew up on the PC and became one of the biggest and most long-played PC videogame series of all time. The original Diablo was released way back in 1996 with its sequel, Diablo 2, hitting over a decade ago in 2000. To put that into perspective, Diablo 1 was released the same year as Super Mario 64 on the N64 and Diablo 2 was released a year BEFORE Final Fantasy X. Old games indeed, but even so people still routinely play and praise them today!

Finally, a modern entry in the series has been released with Diablo 3! This game has been in development for an ETERNITY, first announced way back in 2008. So the game has been in-development for no less than four-years! A true eternity in videogame time. Will the game be worth the wait? We’ll have to wait and see! But already the game sits pretty atop the pre-order charts, so sales for Activision Blizzard are sure to be through the roof!

Diablo III Special Edition logo

The Diablo III Collector’s Edition logo. Epic.

Not to be outdone is the long-waited third entry in Rockstar’s Bullet-time action series “Max Payne”, with Max Payne 3. Finally the action hero of last-generation is being restored for modern times. So this is a very exciting release and definitely one of the biggest and most highly-anticipated releases of the year!

Another big release this week is Game of Thrones, a huge, epic western-style RPG published by Atlus Games (Of Japanese RPG fame), and based on the hit TV show of the same name. It’ll be interesting to see how big of game it is, and how well it sells. Making it an RPG in the vein of “The Witcher” or “Skyrim” was a very smart idea… The 3DS is also getting a new title with Mario Tennis Open from Nintendo & Camelot!

Console and PC Releases of the Week, Physical and Digital (May 14-May 20th 2012):
* Diablo III + Collector’s Edition (May 15th) – PC
* Max Payne 3 (May 15th on Xbox 360 and PS3. May 29th on PC)
* Game of Thrones (May 15th) – Xbox 360, PS3
* Mario Tennis Open (May 15th) – 3DS
* Battleship (May 15th) – Xbox 360, PS3, Wii, DS; Based on the movie of the same name.
